1.1 BACKGROUND
The Propulsion Shafting Systems, Surface Ship Propellers, Waterjets, and Rudders Branch (Code 427) provides Research and Development (R&D) and In-Service Engineering (ISE) services related to the Main Propulsion Shafting System, including bearings, seals, couplings, and shafts. Code 427 is the primary activity for the performance of machinery testing, providing technical support, and acting as the single point of contact for all aspects of cognizant equipment procurement and fleet introduction, including specification development, contract preparation, participation at design reviews, first article testing, on-site engineering investigations, evaluations, and equipment problem resolutions/repairs. As part of these efforts, Code 427 requires engineering services related to the thermal spray application of nanostructured Alumina-Titania ceramic to the waterborne propulsion shaft wear sleeves used throughout the surface fleet.
1.2 SCOPE OF WORK
The contractor shall provide services required to apply a plasma spray ceramic coating to the 70/30 Copper Nickel (CuNi) sleeves of a government furnished shipset of waterborne shafts for a DDG 51 class ship. This effort will include performing a receipt inspection of the four (4x) Ready-For-Issue (RFI) shafts, undercut the CuNi sleeves in the areas specified, surface prep the sleeves, apply plasma spray ceramic coating to the undercut areas, finish grind the coated areas, perform dimensional inspection, and re-preserve and package the shafts for shipping. The shipset of shafts will include two (2x) stern tube shafts and two (2x) propeller shafts.
