C.6.7 Testing

C.6.7.1 Enforcement Tests

There are four types of brake hoses/brake hose assemblies subject to FMVSS No. 106: hydraulic, air, vacuum, and plastic air tubing. Brake hose fittings are also subject to FMVSS No. 106.

NHTSA may either order a set of tests or may order individual tests as specified in Section B of this contract.

Depending on the CLIN ordered, the number of test items procured to complete the work will vary as explained in TP-106-10. For any CLIN, the COR has the option to direct the Contractor to order fewer samples than specified in the applicable TP. In that case, the COR will provide instructions to the Contractor about how many test items to use to complete each individual test. For example, a hydraulic brake hose test would cover all requirement of S5.3.11 through S5.3.13 and would typically require twenty-two (22) test items.

C.6.7.2 Concise Enforcement Tests

The CLINS for the Concise Compliance Test (1003, 2003, 3003, 4003, 5003 and 6003), require eleven (11) test items for the completion of the test sequence. The Concise Compliance Test would use the samples to test to the following standards:

- S5.2.1 - Labeling

- S5.3.1 - Constriction

- S5.3.2 - Expansion and Burst (4 samples)

- S5.3.3 - Whip Resistance (4 samples)

- S5.3.4 – Tensile Strength (2 samples)

- S5.3.6 – Water Absorption and Tensile Strength (2 samples)

In addition to CLINS specifying a complete test sequence for each of the four (4) types of brake hoses/brake hose assemblies, C.6.9 specifies a specific test sequence that can be ordered for up to six

(6) hydraulic brake hose assemblies.

Testing for each type of brake hose assembly is detailed in FMVSS No. 106 and summarized below:

C.6.8 Hydraulic Brake Hoses

A description of each test is provided below.

Labeling (S5.2): Each hydraulic brake hose, except hose sold as part of a motor vehicle, shall have at least two clearly identifiable stripes of at least one-sixteenth of an inch in width, placed on opposite sides of the brake hose parallel to its longitudinal axis. One stripe may be interrupted by the information required by S5.2.2, and the other stripe may be interrupted by additional information at the manufacturer’s option. However, hydraulic brake hose manufactured for use only in an assembly whose end fittings prevent its installation in a twisted orientation in either side of the vehicle, need not meet the requirements of S5.2.1.

Each hydraulic brake hose shall be labeled, or cut from bulk hose that is labeled, at intervals of not more than 6 inches, measured from the end of one legend to the beginning of the next, in block capital letters and numerals at least one-eighth of an inch high, with the information listed in paragraphs (a) through (e) of this section. The information need not be present on hose that is sold as part of a brake hose assembly or a motor vehicle.

Constriction Test (S5.3.1): Refers to a hydraulic brake hose assembly for which every inside diameter of the cross section of hose shall not be less than 64 percent of the nominal diameter.

Expansion and Burst Strength (S5.3.2): Refers to a hydraulic brake hose assembly that is subject to a water pressurization of 4,000 psi for 2 minutes without rupture, and shall not rupture at less than

1 Per S5.3.1 refers to section S5.3.1 of FMVSS No. 106. Likewise, citations preceded with the letter S elsewhere in this contract refer back to FMVSS No. 106.
