About this file
This is a construction specification attachment for the City and County of San Francisco's Playground CPA Repair Project (CON26-0049) at Alta Plaza Playground, located at Scott Street and Washington Street. The project involves significant safety surface and playground equipment replacements and upgrades. The primary scope includes fencing off the work area with approximately 580 linear feet of temporary construction fencing, replacing pour-in-place safety surfaces at both upper and lower terraces, installing a 3/4-inch layer of TPV Supreme pour-in-place material at high-use areas (under swings, slides, and other equipment zones), and replacing existing play equipment with a new Double Tower with Sand Play structure (PCM202631 model). The project encompasses approximately 11,500 square feet of total safety surface area. The specifications require the contractor to verify fall heights and use zones for each piece of equipment prior to safety surfacing installation and to coordinate exact locations and shapes with the city representative before beginning work.
The safety surface specifications detail poured-in-place surfacing materials manufactured by Robertson Recreational Surfaces (Tot Turf Supreme or approved equivalents) with specific requirements for primers, binders, and wear courses that must meet ASTM F1292 and F1951 standards and be IPEMA certified. The contractor is responsible for extra costs or delays associated with product substitutions. Additional requirements include synthetic turf surfacing (Tot Turf Proplay Elite 929 with Forest/Olive Thatch coloring) with a 0.75-inch uniform layer of pure cork infill material at playground areas. The new Double Tower with Sand Play structure features a maximum fall height of 7 feet 4 inches, requires 577 square feet of safety surfacing, and has a play capacity of 24 users for ages 2-5. Material specifications include pressure-impregnated pinewood posts, low-carbon aluminum profiles, molded polypropylene decks made from 75% post-consumer waste, and UV-stabilized polyester ropes with steel cable reinforcement.

This attractive play structure will inspire young children to play actively, using their muscles to climb to the top, slide to the ground, and loop around to start again. The playnet has large holes to climb through or take a break in. The distance between the rungs makes the net a true climbing experience and thus helps support the development of muscles and cross-coordination. It further stimulates cross-modal perception, the cooperation of left and right brain half that makes reading possible. The size of the play unit allows for meeting points, stimulating social skills. The curly climber and slide are thrilling and trains the sense of balance and posture, fundamental skills for navigating the world securely. The sand crane is worked by pulling the chain. The negotiation and cooperation to get sand to and from the funnel via the bucket is great for children and develops social-emotional skills.

Pipe climber
Physical: muscle strength, cross coordination, and spatial awareness when climbing. Social-Emotional: encourage socializing when seated on the bars.
Curved slide
Physical: sliding develops spatial awareness and a sense of balance. Furthermore, the core muscles are trained when sitting upright going down. Social-Emotional: empathy stimulated by turn-taking. Cognitive: young children develop their understanding of space, speed and distances when sliding down quickly.
Climbing net
Physical: children develop cross-body coordination and muscle strength when climbing. The big meshes allow for climbing and crawling through, supporting proprioception and spatial awareness. Social-
Emotional: the big meshes allow for more children to sit together and talk.
Sand shovel
Physical: develops dexterity and upper body muscles. Cognitive: understanding of object permanence, emptying and filling scoop.
Sand scoops panel
Physical: hand eye coordination and push-pull movements. Social-Emotional: invites cooperation with two sides and provides for parallel play. Cognitive: logical thinking:
cause and effect understanding when running scoops in grooves or shifting materials from scoop to scoop. Creative: shifting scoops, creating new scoop positions.
Curly climber
Physical: coordination and proprioception are supported when placing arms and legs correctly for going down. Sense of balance when rotating. Arm muscles for holding tight.
Social-Emotional: empathy stimulated by turn-taking. Cognitive: logical thinking when placing arms and legs right for rotating downward.
Sand bucket
Physical: cross coordination thereby developing cooperation of left and right brain half which is necessary for academic skills such as reading. Cognitive: understanding of object permanence, emptying and filling bucket.
