About this file
This is a technical specification document for a gas-fired air heater system to be installed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, as part of the 3rd Air Stream at B18 Complex project (AF Project Number ZHTV220801, P2# 503968). The specification is included as Attachment 2 to Solicitation COMBO-AFRL-PZLEQ-2026-0007.
The heater shall be provided as a complete factory-assembled heater-burner package capable of continuously producing heated compressed air at process air inlet pressures of 300-750 psig, inlet temperature of 100°F, flow rates of 2.5-34 lbm/s, and discharge temperatures of 250-1,250°F for continuous operation up to 16 hours daily. The system must operate reliably after inactivity periods up to 30 days and be suitable for outdoor installation near an active roadway with salt spray exposure, meeting ASTM B117 corrosion standards and capable of operating at extreme outdoor temperatures documented over a 30-year historical period. The heater shall be designed for a working pressure of 750 psig and operating pressure of 825 psig, with a 316 stainless steel helical coil heat exchanger with minimum 4-inch diameter tubes, an economizer with vertical flue gas flow and cold-end temperature control to maintain surfaces above the flue gas acid dew point, a forced-draft low NOx natural gas burner system with flame safeguard controls, and a master programmable logic controller that monitors all system functions with Ethernet-based interfaces for customer supervisory system integration. Comprehensive submittals are required including shop drawings, product data, design calculations, test reports, certifications, and operation/maintenance manuals, with factory performance testing, hydrostatic testing, and 100 percent radiographic inspection of pressure-retaining welds in austenitic stainless steels and Cr-Mo steels specified prior to delivery.
