3.5 DRILLING WASTE
A. Waste Disposal: Drilling waste such as drilling fluid and drill cuttings shall be removed so that wastes will not interfere with the pumping equipment and will not pollute surface waters or cause contamination of the well. Dispose of drilling waste by spreading the cuttings onsite to a depth of no more than 1”, unless otherwise authorized in writing by the Contracting Officer.
3.6 DISINFECTION
A. General: After the well has been completed, including developing and testing, installation of permanent pump, or at time of tests for yield and drawdown test, whichever is later, clean and disinfect well, equipment, and material in accordance with Article 54 of EPA 570/9-75-001 and as specified in this section.
B. Interim Disinfection: When a delay of 3 or more days will occur between the completion of the well and the regularly scheduled well disinfection, provide an interim disinfection. Apply 10 percent of the amount of an approved disinfectant in liquid form that would be required for final disinfection to the well. Use a hose or tremie pipe of sufficient length to extend to the bottom of the well and raise and lower the pipe during application to assure uniform distribution of the disinfectant solution throughout the well.
C. Disinfection of Wells:
1. Dry Chlorine Compounds: Use dry chlorine compounds to disinfect water table wells.
Move a doubly capped, perforated, pipe container filled with granular chlorine compound up and down the entire well bore until the material has dissolved. Add a stock solution producing a minimum of 200 ppm of available chlorine in the well at intervals from top to bottom and agitate it to distribute the solution evenly throughout the well.
2. Stock Solution: The chlorine solution used for disinfecting the well shall be of such volume and strength and applied so a concentration of at least 500 ppm of chlorine is obtained throughout the well.

3.7 SANITARY PROTECTION OF WELL
A. General: Protect the well during the construction period to prevent tampering or seepage of contaminated water, petroleum products, or other contaminants into the well from the ground surface.
B. Seal: When the well is completed, install a cap compression seal designed to prevent pollutants from entering the well. The watertight casing or pitless wellhead shall extend above the well platform as shown on the drawings. Seal or screen (#24 mesh) equipment that permits direct access to the well to prevent entrance of foreign matter or contaminants.
C. Grading: Slope the ground and concrete slab immediately surrounding the top of the well casing or pitless wellheads away from the well in all directions, as shown on the drawings.
D. Correcting Contamination: If the well becomes contaminated, or water with undesirable physical or chemical characteristics enters the well due to the neglect of the Contractor, corrective work including the supplying of casing, seals, sterilizing agents, or other materials necessary to prevent contamination of the aquifers shall be performed at the Contractor's expense.
3.8 CLEANUP
A. Requirements: Upon completion of the well construction and other incidentals, remove the debris and surplus materials resulting from the work from the jobsite.
