About this file

This is a functional specification for a greenhouse climate control system to be installed at the Naval Research Laboratory's Laboratory for Autonomous Systems Research (LASR) facility in Washington, DC. The system must simulate a Southeast Asian tropical environment with precise automated control of temperature, humidity, air circulation, solar radiation, and light exposure to maintain stable plant growth conditions year-round.

The contractor must provide a complete UL/NEMA-rated control system including an industrial climate panel with low-voltage control hardware, relays, contactors, transformers, and backup power. Indoor sensors must monitor temperature, humidity, and solar radiation, while a fully integrated weather station with outdoor temperature, humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, and rain sensors must be furnished and installed. The system software must provide real-time monitoring, continuous data logging with export capability, fully automated coordinated control with configurable setpoints, manual override capability, and fault detection with alarm notifications. The control system must maintain approximately 80°F temperature (heating at 75°F, deactivation at 85°F; exhaust/ventilation activation at 90°F), approximately 80% relative humidity (fogging activation at 75%, deactivation at 85%), continuous air circulation with staged fan operation, and staged ventilation control with roof, gable, and sidewall vents modulating based on temperature thresholds. Shade operation must be based on solar radiation levels with setpoints determined jointly during commissioning. The contractor must install all hardware and wiring, configure CAT6 cables for communication with the government-provided PC, remove existing control hardware, and perform point-to-point verification and sensor calibration. System acceptance requires temperature maintained within 5°F of setpoint, humidity within 5% RH, correct ventilation and shading operation, full weather station integration, operation per the Sequence of Operations, and functional logging and alarms. The contractor must provide comprehensive documentation, on-site training by the software manufacturer technician, and a minimum one-year warranty covering all equipment, installation, integration, and workmanship.

4. Control System Sequence of Operations and Performance Requirements The control system must automatically regulate temperature, humidity, ventilation, and air circulation to maintain stable greenhouse conditions. Equipment shall operate in staged responses based on changing environmental conditions to stay within defined setpoints. The system must also use outdoor data and owner/end user-defined sequences to support coordinated and consistent operation.

4.1 Temperature Control: The system must maintain a target temperature of approximately 80°F. Heating shall activate at 75°F and deactivate at 85°F. Exhaust and ventilation systems must activate at 90°F and deactivate at 85°F.

4.2 Humidity Control: The system must maintain approximately 80% relative humidity. Fogging must activate at 75% and deactivate at 85%. Ventilation must activate at 90% and deactivate at 80%.

4.3 Air Circulation: Air circulation systems must operate continuously, with high mode (8 fans) operation during cooling cycles and low mode (4 fans) operation during stable conditions.

4.4 Ventilation Control: The greenhouse ventilation system must maintain an internal temperature setpoint of 80°F using staged control of roof, gable, and sidewall vents.
