About this file

This is a Request for Bid (RFB) issued by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station at Auburn University for a contract grazing cattle project at the Wiregrass Research and Extension Center in Headland, Alabama. The solicitation seeks 50 head of crossbred, gentle, large-framed stocker steers weighing between 450-525 pounds, to be delivered between December 12-16, 2022, for fall and winter grazing trials lasting approximately 150 days from mid-December 2022 to April 2023. The cattle must be #1 grade, not exceed one-eighth Brahman, castrated, dehorned, pre-conditioned for 25-30 days, and assembled from as few ranches as possible to ensure uniformity.

The compensation structure involves the successful bidder being paid by Auburn University based on the average weight gain of the cattle, with the bidder responsible for death losses up to 2% of total weight. Cattle will be weighed on certified scales both incoming and outgoing, with compensation calculated as a price per pound of average gain added, less 2% shrinkage. The stocking rate is set at 2.0 head per acre on cool-season annual grass mixtures (rye, oats, triticale, crimson clover, and brassica), with supplemental feed provided only when forage is limited. The Wiregrass Research and Extension Center reserves the right to inspect and reject cattle that do not meet specifications or appear chronically ill.
