About this file
This document specifies the mandatory and optional marking requirements for Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations marked vehicles.
Mandatory markings must be applied to all Forest Service marked law enforcement vehicles and include: an 11.25" x 15" Law Enforcement (LE) badge centered on both driver and forward passenger doors; a green 2" stripe and gold 1" stripe running the full side length of the vehicle; a green 6" x 42" "LAW ENFORCEMENT" decal; two 3.5" x 6.65" American flags on the front fenders; a brown 6" Forest Service shield on the passenger side rear quarter; a full-color 4.75" x 6.65" USDA logo on the driver side rear quarter; a reflective 8.25" x 11" LE badge on the left rear lift gate or tailgate; a reflective green 7" x 15" "LAW ENFORCEMENT" stacked decal on the right rear lift gate or tailgate; and a 1.5" brown Working Capital Fund equipment number on the lower right tailgate. All decals must be obtained from Director-approved vendors. K-9 vehicles require the same markings plus reflective K-9-specific decals including "CAUTION POLICE DOG" and "K-9 UNIT" markings on side and rear windows, and a reflective red 7" x 15" "CAUTION POLICE DOG" decal on the right rear lift gate in lieu of the standard green "LAW ENFORCEMENT" decal. The document permits minor adjustments to accommodate vehicle style or external impediments while maintaining symmetry, allows supervisory approval of window tinting, and authorizes reflectorized materials for high-visibility traffic enforcement areas. Optional markings include 24-inch black block-style letters or numbers (maximum four characters) on the vehicle roof to identify the patrol unit or officer's radio call sign as determined by the Special Agent in Charge. Specialty vehicles such as all-terrain vehicles, utility vehicles, snowmobiles, trailers, command and control vehicles, and aircraft should replicate the standard marked vehicle appearance as closely as possible. The document includes visual reference diagrams showing proper decal application for marked patrol SUVs and trucks.

Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations
Marked Vehicle Specifications
1. Mandatory Markings. All marking decals must be obtained from a vendor approved by the Director. Ensure that all Forest Service marked law enforcement vehicles display the following markings:
a. A 11.25” x 15” LE badge centered vertically and horizontally on both the driver and forward passenger doors. Minor vertical and horizontal adjustments can be made to accommodate external vehicle markings or impediments, but every effort should be made to center the badge on the door.
A green 2” stripe and gold 1” stripe below and touching the green stripe originating from the side of the grill area and extending down the entire side length of the vehicle, terminating at the tail light assembly or tailgate seam. Position the stripes just above the door handles and below the bottom edge of the window frames applied horizontally to match the lines of the vehicle. The striping will not be placed below the top edge of the door handles.
A green 6” x 42” “LAW ENFORCEMENT” decal centered vertically to the LE badge and centered horizontally between the edge LE badge and the rear fender well or bed seam of the vehicle.
Two 3.5” x 6.65” American flags, one on each side of the front fender of the vehicle, star fields forward. The flags should be placed approximately 1” in front of the fender seam and approximately 1”-3” below the bottom of the gold stripe. The American flags will be the same height on both sides of the vehicle.
A brown 6” traditional Forest Service shield on the passenger side rear quarter of the vehicle approximately 1”-3” forward of the rear taillight assembly and approximately 1”-3” below the bottom of the gold stripe, aligned vertically with the American flag.
A full color 4.75” x 6.65” USDA logo on the driver side rear quarter of the vehicle approximately 1”-3” forward of the rear taillight assembly and approximately 1”-3” below the bottom of the gold stripe, aligned vertically with the American flag.
A reflective 8.25” x 11” LE badge on the left side rear lift gate or tailgate of the vehicle, centered approximately vertically between the top and bottom painted edges of the rear lift gate or tailgate and centered approximately horizontally between the left edge of the rear lift gate or tailgate and license plate recess of lift gate or center of tailgate.
A reflective green 7” x 15” “LAW ENFORCEMENT” stacked layout on the right side rear lift gate or tailgate of the vehicle, centered approximately vertically between the top and bottom painted edges of the rear hatch or tailgate and centered approximately horizontally between the left edge of the rear lift gate or tailgate and license plate recess of lift gate or center of tailgate.
A 1.5” brown Working Capital Fund equipment number will be placed on the lower right most portion of the tailgate or lift gate.
b. Markings for K-9 vehicles must be the same as any Forest Service marked law enforcement vehicle with the addition of the following:
All K-9 wording specific decals will be reflective.
A reflective white 1.5” x 19” “CAUTION POLICE DOG” on each back seat door window of the vehicle 2” below the top closed position.
A reflective white 4” x 20” “K-9 UNIT” on each rear-most side windows centered vertically and horizontally. For trucks, this sticker can be co-located on the same window as the paragraph above immediately below the “CAUTION POLICE DOG.”
A reflective red 7” x 15” “CAUTION POLICE DOG” stacked layout on the right side rear lift gate or tailgate of the vehicle, centered approximately vertically between the top and bottom painted edges of the rear hatch or tailgate and centered approximately horizontally between the left edge of the rear lift gate or tailgate and license plate recess of lift gate or center of tailgate. This is in lieu of the reflective green 7” x 15” “LAW ENFORCEMENT” stacked layout.
c. Window tinting may be applied to the windows of Law Enforcement and Investigations vehicles with supervisory approval.
d. If either the style of the vehicle or external vehicle markings or impediments preclude placing the decals according to paragraphs a. and b., minor adjustments can be made while maintaining the best symmetry of the vehicle.
e. Special Agents in Charge may approve using reflectorized material on the side of vehicles where high visibility traffic enforcement is routinely conducted or where other safety concerns are identified. The markings will include all the following: door LE badges, green and gold striping, and “LAW ENFORCEMENT” decals as described in paragraphs a. and b. No reflectorized American flags, USDA logo, or Forest Service shields will be allowed.
f. The Director, LEI shall approve markings in cases where the vehicle type does not physically permit the marking to be placed as outlined in paragraphs a. through b.
g. No additional markings are allowed unless approved by the Director, LEI.
2. Optional Markings. 24” inch black, block style letters and/or numbers may be placed in the center of the vehicle's roof. If used, ensure that these letters and/or numbers either identify the patrol unit, or the officer's radio call sign, as determined by the SAC. Limit roof identification letters and/or numbers to no more than four.
3. Specialty Vehicles. Marked specialty vehicles, such as all-terrain vehicles, utility vehicles, snow mobiles, trailers, command and control vehicles, aircraft, etc., should be marked to replicate the look of the standard marked law enforcement vehicles, as closely as possible.
