About this file

This is a Statement of Work for the harvesting, transport, and delivery of two Christmas trees to Washington DC in 2026.

The primary deliverable involves extracting and transporting the National Christmas Tree (Tree #4, approximately 36 feet) from the Slab Camp area in Highland County, VA to the White House Ellipse, with delivery scheduled for November 14th. A backup tree (Tree #11, approximately 34 feet) in the Locust Springs area is available only if the primary tree is damaged or destroyed prior to extraction. A second tree (Tree #12, approximately 34 feet) designated for the US Department of Transportation is located in the Locust Springs area and must be delivered to USDOT headquarters in Washington DC by November 30th, with no backup available for this tree. The vendor will use excavators or similar USFS-approved equipment to secure, cut, and move each tree to a loading area while preventing damage, then load the trees onto flatbed trailers for transport to Washington DC. Additional work includes removing dead limbs from surrounding spruce trees along the equipment routes at both sites using excavator buckets or alternative equipment, and transporting approximately 12 to 15 additional limbs per tree that will be cut from nearby trees by USFS personnel. Trees will be supported with cribbing at the top and bottom, tarped, and secured to prevent damage during transport. The agency is flexible regarding harvesting and retrieval methods provided trees are delivered undamaged and within the specified timelines.

Statement of Work

National Christmas Tree and the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Christmas Tree Delivery to Washington DC (2026)

For 2026, the selected candidates for the National Christmas Tree and the USDOT Christmas Tree are in the Laurel Fork area in Highland County, VA (Map 1 – Vicinity Map) .

- The tree (#4 - approximately 36’) to be extracted for the National tree is in the Slab Camp area (Map 2, includes GPS coordinates).

The back-up tree (#11 - approximately 34’ ) is in the Locust Springs area (Map 3, includes GPS coordinates).

- Although unlikely, the backup would only be used if the selected tree is damaged or destroyed prior to extraction.

- The USDOT tree ( # 12 - approximately 34’) is in the Locust Springs area (Map 3, includes GPS coordinates). There is not a backup tree for the USDOT tree.

The agency is open to various methods of harvesting and retrieving the tree if the tree can be delivered undamaged and within expected timelines.

Depending on the site, the vendor will use an excavator or similar equipment / combination of equipment (as approved by USFS), to secure and hold the tree as it is cut, moving the tree to the loading area (tramming distances on attached maps), while making sure the tree is secured properly while moving to prevent damage, and then load the tree onto a flatbed trailer / truck for transport.

The vendor will also be required to break away several higher “dead” limbs on some surrounding spruce trees on the route using the bucket on the excavator or with other equipment (while tramming the equipment in) at the Locust Springs and Slabtown sites. This will be done so that the equipment or trees will not be damaged by the dead branches. Cribbing will be used to support the top and bottom of the tree. The tree will be tarped and well secured to prevent damage.

Approximately 12 to 15 additional limbs per tree will be transported as well, which will be cut from near-by trees by the USFS.

The National tree will then be transported to Washington DC where it will be handed over to the National Park Service at the White House Ellipse on November 14th . The USDOT tree will be transported to the USDOT headquarters building in Washington DC and handed over to DOT personnel on November 30th.
