About this file

This is a Statement of Work from the US Department of Agriculture for the procurement of a specimen surface laser marking device for research purposes.

The Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) requires a UV laser marking system with specific technical specifications to support multiscale material characterization research on wood and cellulose-based products. The contractor must provide a YVO4 marking laser with a wavelength of 355 nm and 7W power at the marking surface. The system must deliver a marking area of at least 120 × 120 mm with a laser spot size of at most 30 micrometers and marking repeatability of +/-10 micrometers. The marking depth requirements include capability for non-planar surfaces, a depth of field of at least +/-20 mm, automatic contour detection with 0.5 mm resolution, and automatic focus within the depth of field. Additional requirements specify IP64 head/optics enclosure protection rating, an air-cooled laser system, and no crystal shifting capability required. The complete laser marking system and associated equipment/accessories must be delivered to the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin on or before August 3, 2026. No government-furnished equipment, travel, key personnel assignments, security requirements, data rights issues, or Section 508 compliance requirements are specified for this contract.

Statement of Work

Project Specimen Surface Laser Marking Device

General Information

1.0 Scope of Work

Provide a UV laser marking device for specimen patterning.

2.0 Background

The Forest Biopolymers Science and Engineering Research Work Unit (RWU4707) at FPL conducts research on the multiscale material characterization of wood and wood products. Wood and cellulose-based materials are highly heterogeneous complex materials that require full-field deformation measurements to properly characterize the mechanical behavior for use in various forest products markets. The most effective methods for full-field metrology utilize imaging of patterned surfaces. A UV laser marking device enables high contrast “cold marking” of specimen surfaces at high resolution while minimizing thermal damage.
