About this file

This is a Specifications document for a federal procurement of scientific equipment by the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Pullman, Washington location.

The USDA ARS Pullman requests purchase of one new benchtop microbial isolation and cultivation platform (Brand Name Prospector or Equal) to support high-throughput isolation and characterization of microorganisms from environmental samples including plant tissues, soil, and rhizosphere microbiomes. The system must support parallel high-density cultivation (greater than 6,000 wells per array) using nanoscale microwell arrays, enable automated imaging and identification with fluorescence imaging capabilities across multiple excitation and detection wavelengths, and facilitate automated recovery of isolates for transfer to standard multi-well plates. The platform must minimize hands-on time and support reproducible isolate recovery for downstream genomic and phenotypic analyses. The complete package must include the instrument, computer, software, necessary accessories, and training. The system must operate on 115V/60Hz (US) power.

Delivery is required 60 days after receipt of order to Vogel Plant Biosciences Building, Room 329, 410 SE Dairy Road, Pullman, WA 99164, with contact to Dr. Dmitri Mavrodi (dmitri.mavrodi@usda.gov, 509-339-0933). The procurement includes installation, assembly, general user training, a one-year commercial warranty, and routine maintenance availability. Shipping must be included in the quote. No security requirements or delivery escort is needed.

SPECIFICATIONS

1.0 Specifications Description:

Benchtop Microbial Isolation and Cultivation Platform - New

Quantity: 1

Unit Type: Each

Minimum Requirements:

The USDA ARS Pullman, WA location requests purchase of a new benchtop microbial isolation and cultivation platform (Brand Name Prospector or Equal) to support high-throughput isolation and characterization of microorganisms from complex environmental samples, including plant tissues, soil, and rhizosphere microbiomes. The system must enable massively parallel cultivation using dense nanoscale microwell arrays, allowing simultaneous growth and recovery of thousands of individual microbial colonies. The platform must integrate automated imaging, isolate selection, and transfer into standard multi-well plates, significantly reducing manual handling while increasing throughput and reproducibility compared with traditional cultivation methods. These capabilities are essential for efficiently processing large collections of plant pathogens and identifying strains with beneficial traits such as plant growth promotion, secondary metabolite production, and pathogen antagonism.

Requirements:

1. General Requirements

The system shall be a benchtop microbial isolation and cultivation platform capable of massively parallel cultivation via nanoscale microwell arrays. The system must be new, fully integrated, and compatible with downstream microbiological and molecular biology workflows, including transfer to standard multi-well plates.

2. Performance Requirements

The system shall:

• Support the parallel high-density (> 6,000 wells per array) microwell array-based cultivation of microorganisms at nanoscale.

• Enable automated imaging, identification, and recovery of selected isolates.

• Provide fluorescence imaging capabilities across multiple excitation and detection wavelengths.

• Minimize hands-on time by automating isolation, picking, and transfer steps.

• Support reproducible recovery of isolates for downstream genomic and phenotypic analyses.

3. Other Requirements

• In addition to the instrument, the package should include a computer, software, necessary accessories, and training

• 115 V/60 Hz (US)

• Shipping should be included with the quote
