Statement of Work

1.0 Specifications Description:

Description of bison crowding, half-circle tub, and alleyways handling equipment

All equipment will be made of at least 14-gauge metal and painted with all components advertised/designed for handling adult bison. The components of the system (i.e. gates and half circle) will typically be constructed with vertical bars with sheet or galvanneal metal lining the internal surface such that animals being handled cannot see through the handling system.

The half-circle (tub) shall be at 8 to 9 feet in height and lined by solid sheet or galvanneal metal inside of the curve. The half-circle will have a pivot post in the center connected to a rotating gate at least 82 inches in height and approximately 10 feet in length made with at least 5 metal bars from top to bottom and covered with solid sheet or galvanneal metal. The rotating gate will have rotation capabilities of approximately 270 degrees allowing it to completely open into the catch pens and close in the circle to approximately the width of the gate opening into the alleyway/load out sections. The sides of the half circle will contain mechanisms to lock the rotating gate in place at routine intervals of approximately 2-3 feet of the outer circumference of the gate. The half circle will have a catwalk with a ladder located on its outer circumference for personnel to manage animals within the half-circle.

Beginning at the exit to the half circle will be a straight alleyway section with a sliding/sorting gate of approximately 82 inches in height and 60 inches in width that opens to the right (into the inner circle of the circular alleyway). It shall be secured to a half-circle have a sliding sorting gate (as described previously and opens into the inner circle of the alleyway) at its opposite end where it connects with a crowd panel/sorting cage which allows separation of animals into a curved alleyway. The alleyway will contain a load out section that can be closed off with sliding gates. Both the alleyway and load-out section will have solid side walls and have a catwalk along the inner surface of alleyway and outside surface of the load-out. Enclosure of the top potion of the alleyways is preferred. The load-out section will have sliding gates (as described above) on both the front and back of the load-out section. The alleyway will be divided into at least 3 sections of approximately 10 feet in outer length each separated by sliding gates (as described above) and be circular such that an approximately 180-degree angle occurs in the alleyway between the half-circle and the chute/palpation cage. The alleyway will connect to a chute with bolt/pin connections on both sides with connections for pins/bolts to the chute.

The catch pens will be of composed of three sections, with each section approximately 8 feet or greater in height with solid sheet or galvanneal metal on the inside surface and a continuous catwalk on both sides of the sections. The total length of the catch pens will be approximately 33 to 40 feet. Each section shall be separated by a rotating gate with approximately 180-degree movement, and capable of having a rope connected for handling operations. The gates will swing from the right side of the sections (when facing toward the half circle). In addition, the section just prior to the half circle will have a swing gate with approximately 180 movement that allows opening into the barn with the swing gate preferably pivoting from the side close to the half circle. The last section of the catch pens will have swinging gate sections opening into the pasture having approximately 180-degree movement. It would be preferable if the gate into the pasture pivoted from the connection nearest the fence and the gate into the alleyway pivoting from the building (right) side. Each gate should have a mechanism that allows it to be secured and locked in place in a manner that bison cannot breech. Structure of the catch pens will be interconnected (between and across) for stability such that adult bison will not be able to forcibly separate different sections.

Bidding will include on-site installation.

Proposed updated scoping guidance:

1. General design and build notes (these apply to all subsequent design features)

a. All equipment will be of welded construction consisting of varying thicknesses of steel with a minimum thickness of 14 gauge and will, at a minimum, be pregalvanized steel. Additionally, the following minimum standards will be followed for specific components:

i. Ground engaging posts will be Hot Dip Galvanized, with a minimum diameter of 3” with a minimum thickness of 0.150”

ii. Fence railing will be pregalvanized steel with a minimum diameter of 2.00” (or a minimum width of 2.00” in the case of square or rectangular components) with a minimum nominal thickness of 11 gauge.

iii. Steel sheeting will be applied to the inside surface of the corrals at the appropriate places to facilitate calm handling of the bison and to manage their line of sight. Steel sheeting shall be pregalvanized steel with a minimum thickness of 14 gauge.

b. Hot dip galvanized steel posts shall be buried underground a minimum of 30” (deeper where necessary) and surrounded by concrete. Concrete shall be domed at ground level to create a slope away from the steel post to prevent moisture accumulation at the point of ground engagement.

c. All weld points shall be either hot dip galvanized, zinc plated or painted with zinc rich cold galvanizing paint.

d. All gates shall be hung with long-lasting, replaceable, self-lubricating bushings to allow for quiet, grease-less operation for many years. The bushings shall be replaceable through routine maintenance (i.e. without cutting/welding) should that ever become necessary.

2. Tub (Forcing Pen) design notes

a. Tub walls shall be 8 to 9 feet in height and lined by sheet steel inside of the curve.

b. The pivot post shall be hot dip galvanized steel and will be a minimum of 6 inches in diameter with a minimum wall thickness of 0.1875 inches.

c. The perimeter posts of the tub will be Hot Dip Galvanized, with a minimum diameter of 3” with a minimum thickness of 0.150”.

d. All posts will be securely concreted into the ground.

e. A minimum of three connections between the perimeter posts and the center post shall be made with pregalvanized steel tubing a minimum of 2.00” in diameter and 0.120” thick.

f. The tub gate shall be a minimum height of 82 inches in height with at least 5 steel rails and shall be fully sheeted.

g. The tub gate shall be operable from an elevated catwalk around the outside perimeter of the curved panels. The rigid, curved handle shall extend in such a way that the tub gate can be pulled closed from the fully open position while standing on the outside catwalk. In other words, the tub gate handle can be remotely accessed from across the tub while the operator is on a catwalk.

h. The exit of the tub shall be funneled in such a way as to prevent any blind corners for animals to turn into and the tub gate shall swing freely from fully open to fully closed and back open again from operating positions along the tub catwalk.

i. Access gates shall be provided at the tub exit to allow operators to walk from the area inside the curved alleyway out to the outside of the 10’ collection alley if needed.

j. The tub gate shall be held open by a strong magnet such that normal animal flow and vibrations will not cause the gate to accidentally close or block the flow of animals into the curved alley.

k. The latching mechanism on the tub shall have two fixed positions: open (non-latching) and closed (ratcheting). The two positions shall be positively engaged such that they will remain in action until the operator definitively moves the latch to the other position.

3. Catwalk design notes

a. Catwalk shall be a minimum of 18” wide and shall allow the operator to see and reach over into the fully sheeted and elevated sections of the system.

b. The tub catwalk shall be connected to the 10’ collection alley catwalk such that an operator can walk from the rear end of the system all the way to the curved alley without exiting the catwalk.

c. Catwalk shall be supplied with handrails and multiple access steps for operator safety.

4. Curved alley design notes

a. The alleyway will be constructed of concreted-in, ground-engaging posts that will be Hot Dip Galvanized, with a minimum diameter of 3” with a minimum thickness of 0.150”.

b. The inlet of the curved alleyway will have a sliding gate operable from either the tub catwalk or the ground.

c. Further sliding gates shall be provided at intervals of approximately 10 feet along the alleyway.

d. The alleyway shall have a diversion gate that allows for ground loading of animals into a trailer. The ground loading alleyway shall have a sliding gate at its outlet.

e. The sliding gate at the entrance to the diversion to the loading alleyway shall be push-out so that it may be operated from inside the curved alleyway.

f. The radius of the curved alley shall be a minimum of 15 feet from the center point to the outside fence of the alley to facilitate smooth animal flow.

g. Each section of alleyway will be provided with robust hinges and latches to allow animals to be allowed to escape from the alleyway in an emergency.

h. The alleyway shall be operated from ground level and sheeted in such a way that animals cannot jump out. Therefore, the alleyway section will not require catwalks.

5. Collection alley (catch pens) design notes

a. The collection alley shall consist of three 10’ x 10’ sections of corral with ground engaging posts constructed of steel tubing that will be Hot Dip Galvanized, with a minimum diameter of 3” with a minimum thickness of 0.150”.

b. The walls of the collection alley shall be constructed of steel panels, fully sheeted.

c. The gates within the collection alley shall be operable from both catwalks via a rigid, curved handle that shall extend in such a way that the gate can be pulled closed from the full open position while standing on the outside catwalk. In other words, the gate handle can be remotely accessed from across the collection alley while the operator is on either catwalk.

d. The gates will swing from the right side of the sections (when facing toward the half circle).

e. In addition, the section just prior to the half circle will have a swing gate with approximately 180 movement that allows opening into the barn with the swing gate preferably pivoting from the side close to the half circle.

f. The last section of the catch pens will have swinging gate sections opening into the pasture having approximately 180-degree movement. It would be preferable if the gate into the pasture pivoted from the connection nearest the fence and the gate into the alleyway pivoting from the building (right) side.

g. Each gate should have a mechanism that allows it to be secured and locked in place in a manner that bison cannot breech.

h. Structure of the catch pens will be anchored by concreted posts and interconnected at the top of each post for stability such that adult bison will not be able to forcibly separate different sections.

6. Installation design notes

a. Installer shall provide surveyed or laid outposts for all post holes and shall dig post holes to the depth specified in design documents.

b. Concrete shall be poured to secure posts into the ground, domed to prevent water from remaining at the point of ground engagement, and as a pad with appropriate traction stamping in any high traffic areas specified by the customer.

c. The bison chute placed at the end of the curved alleyway shall be secured either by pinning, by bolting, or by welding, at the customer’s direction.
