Product Description Summary

This is a product specification document for the Geophex Ltd. GEM2 Ski Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) meter. The instrument measures apparent conductivity and in-phase magnetic susceptibility components across multiple depth ranges simultaneously without requiring soil-to-instrument contact. The device has a maximum effective exploration depth of 1.5 to 2.3 meters and supports applications in agriculture, archaeology, and soil sciences. The standard configuration includes multiple receiver coils separated from the transmitter coil in various dipole orientations, with temperature compensation circuitry to minimize drift. The meter supports both walking and vehicle-mounted survey methods and connects to field computers via Bluetooth wireless communication. Optional accessories include a lightweight rechargeable battery pack (25 hours operation), expandable calibration pole, and protective capsule for trailer-mounted operations.

The instrument's technical specifications include a conductivity measuring range of 1000 mS/m with 0.1 mS/m resolution, in-phase measuring range of ±80 ppt with 10 ppm resolution, and measurement accuracy of ±4% at 50 mS/m. Intercoil spacing consists of a minimum of two coils separated at 1 and 0.5 meters. Power options include internal rechargeable Li-Ion battery, supplementary disposable battery, 12V car socket, and external rechargeable battery pack, with battery life of +12 hours continuous operation or +25 hours for the rechargeable pack. The instrument operates across temperatures from -10°C to +50°C, measures 200 cm length by 15 cm width or less, and weighs 5 kg or less. Data output supports RS-232 serial port or Bluetooth connectivity with USB data transfer capability. Delivery is required within 60 calendar days after purchase order receipt to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Michigan State Office, located at 3001 Coolidge Road, Suite 250, East Lansing, MI 48823.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Geophex Ltd. GEM2 Ski Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) meter provides measurement of both the quad-phase (conductivity) and in-phase (magnetic susceptibility) components within multiple and distinct depth ranges, all simultaneously, without any requirement for soil-to-instrument contact.

With a maximum effective depth of exploration of 1.5 to 2.3 meters, applications in agriculture, archaeology and general soil sciences are common. The standard EMI meter includes multiple receiver coils, separated from the transmitter coil, which provides data from the effective depth ranges of the various receiver coils in various dipole orientations (i.e., vertical dipole versus horizontal dipole). The coil technology is supported by temperature compensation circuitry that improves temperature-related drift characteristics. Supporting both walking and vehicle-mounted survey methods, external power sources can be connected to the instrument for extended field operations. Optional accessories include: a lightweight rechargeable battery pack that provides 25 hours of continuous operation, an expandable calibration pole, and, for trailer mounted operations, a protective capsule, constructed of durable plastic materials. Data collection is supported by a data acquisition system or other appropriate field computer, connected by Bluetooth wireless communication.
