About this file
This is a technical drawing attachment for a federal construction project at the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) National Centers for Animal Health in Ames, Iowa. The drawings provide detailed specifications for the ARU Fencing and Concrete Line Feeders 2026 project, which involves the removal and replacement of fencing for animal containment and renovation of feeding areas across multiple corral and pasture locations. The scope includes: installation of wooden fence panels with 8-inch end posts and 6-inch center posts for field barns 201 and 202; replacement of fencing in corrals 203 and 204 with new concrete feeder areas and removal of select 6-foot gates; pasture perimeter fencing for areas 207 and 208 (approximately 1,476 feet each); and new concrete line feeder pads at locations 209, Z3, and H6. The concrete specifications require 4,000 psi strength at 28 days, 8-inch depth pads with 12-inch tall knee walls, Schedule 80 metal posts on 10-foot centers, #5 rebar reinforcement, and rounded bull-nosed top finish. All measurements are approximate, requiring field verification by the contractor prior to construction.
The drawings indicate that the contractor may utilize an existing USDA spoil pile containing crushed concrete and gravel as fill material and base for the project. Construction details specify round tube steel fencing and gates, with existing gates to be reused where applicable. Line feeder pad dimensions vary by location: 31 feet by 17 feet by 8 inches for location 209; 40 feet by 20 feet by 8 inches for H6; 36 feet by 7 feet by 8 inches for Z3; and 53 feet by 7 feet by 8 inches for the alternate Z3 location. The knee wall specifications include dowel embedment into existing slabs, epoxy anchoring, and quality control requirements for form alignment and concrete curing. The drawings reference the Statement of Work for complete task descriptions and are identified as prepared under Project Number ARU for designer Tommy Walker with revision tracking available.

KNEE WALL / CURB SPECIFICATION
1. Dimensions & Geometry •Height: 12 in •Thickness: 6 in •Alignment: Centered in line with existing steel posts •Spacing Between Posts: 9 ft - 4.5 in (field verify and adjust for forms) •Top Profile: Rounded (bull nosed) finish along entire length
2. Reinforcement •Rebar Size: #5 (⅝ in diameter) •Quantity: (5) #5 bars continuous along the length of the curb •Configuration:
o Bars evenly distributed within the 6 in thickness o Maintain minimum 2 in concrete cover on all sides •Dowels:
o Vertical dowels from curb into existing slab o Embedment: 4 in into existing concrete slab o Spacing: 22.5 in on center (aligned with steel posts) o Bar Size: #5 o Anchorage: Epoxy set dowels using ICC approved adhesive
3. Concrete Requirements •Concrete Strength: 4,000 psi @ 28 days •Slump: 4–5 in •Air Entrainment: 5–7% (recommended for freeze–thaw climates) •Aggregate: ASTM C33 compliant •Finish:
o Smooth formed sides o Rounded top to specified radius (typically ¾ in unless otherwise noted)
4. Installation Requirements •Surface Prep:
o Clean existing slab of dust, laitance, and debris o Drill holes for dowels to manufacturer’s diameter and depth o Blow out and clean holes before epoxy installation •Form work:
o Secure forms to maintain 6 in width and 12 in height o Use rounded top form insert or hand tool after screeding •Placement:
o Concrete placed continuously to avoid cold joints o Vibrate lightly to eliminate voids •Curing:
o Apply curing compound or wet cure for minimum 3 days
5. Quality Control •Verify dowel spacing and embedment depth •Confirm rebar placement and cover before pour •Inspect form alignment and top radius profile •Perform slump and air tests as required
