About this file
This document appears to be an email exchange regarding dimensional clarification for drawing C-16818 related to a federal contract opportunity. The email discusses the specifications for the barrel mold recession ID and end plate OD, noting a discrepancy between the drawing and the part measurements in use. The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation (N6449824Q5130) issued by the Department of the Navy Naval Sea Systems Command for the procurement and fabrication of two custom steel finish horizontal machining barrels, four end plates, and associated hardware per drawing C-16818. Quotes for this requirement are due by July 31, 202 at 11:00 am EST.

Hello Warren, I reviewed the drawing in question, C-16818. What I see on the drawing is a 3 degree taper on the mold recess, starting from 27.349", as you noted .
The end plate has a max OD of 27.359", but then a 3 degree taper/slope to the edges, giving it the 27.25" OD on the edges.
Per the drawing, the endplate will fit the mold recess. The tapers allow for easier fit for the operators and at the same time, a fit with less "slop", helping to keep the endplate centered.
Does the end plate that you have measure 27.25" all the way across the edge? Or is there a high point?
It's possible that new end plates were made over the years and the taper was removed.
Does the mold recess have a taper? It should.
In QC, we will make sure the end plate fits the mold recess.
We can increase the clearance a tiny bit, but it should be fine as it is.
Let me know if this is satisfactory.
Kind Regards, Will CCMCo

Hello Megan & Will;
In reviewing drawing C-16818, NFPC noted the barrel recession ID is 27.349" TYP and the end plate OD is 27.359". Fit??? We have measured the barrel and end plates that are in service in our shop. The barrel recession ID is 27.375" and the end plate OD is 27.250. A reasonable fit. For a C-16818 barrel mold arriving at NFPC in the future, what recess ID and end plate OD dimensions can we expect?
