About this file
This document is a Call to Industry (CTI) issued by Central Plateau Cleanup Company (CPCCo) seeking industry capabilities for handling and processing approximately 300,000 gallons of bulk, potentially radioactively contaminated metallic sodium stored at the Hanford Site. The CTI requests information on commercially viable processes for large-quantity sodium disposition, organizations willing to accept radioactively contaminated materials, facility design experience, turn-key conversion systems, and existing or potential treatment capabilities.
Key details include a response deadline of June 19, 2025, with submissions accepted via email to Rayna Moe at Rayna_R_Moe@rl.gov. The document references a 2002 sodium disposition trade-off study and seeks to update approaches for converting bulk sodium to sodium hydroxide solution. The sodium inventory is categorized from three sources: Fast Flux Test Facility (260,000 gal), Hallam Reactor (34,000 gal), and Sodium Reactor Experiment (7,000 gal), currently stored in various configurations including reactor coolant systems, storage tanks, and sealed drums. The information collected will be used to develop a public document exploring sodium disposition options.

CALL TO INDUSTRY NO: CPCC-RRM-25-001
TITLE: BULK METALLIC SODIUM
Page 1 of 3 Form update 9/3/2024
May 15, 2025
Dear Interested Parties:
CALL TO INDUSTRY: ASSESS CURRENT CAPABILITIES WITH RESPECT TO
TRANSPORTING, HANDLING AND PROCESSING LARGE QUANTITIES OF BULK,
POTENTIALLY RADIOACTIVELY CONTAMINATED METALLIC SODIUM
Central Plateau Cleanup Company (CPCC), Richland, Washington, under Prime Contract
89303320DEM000030 with the U.S. Department of Energy is interested in receiving possible solutions or current capabilities with respect to transporting, handling and processing large quantities of bulk, potentially radioactively contaminated metallic sodium.
Introduction
Information collected may be used by CPCCo to update a 2002 study (FFTF-14308 Hanford Site
Sodium Disposition Trade-Off Study). This Call to Industry shall serve as a method of identifying industry capabilities (existing or potential for development) and how those capabilities could be used to define disposition options for bulk, metallic sodium currently stored on the Hanford Site.
Participation in this Call to Industry does not prequalify or disqualify a prospective vendor for follow on scope with CPCCo. Information provided may be used in the creation of a path forward and potentially used in the development of a Scope of Work for a disposition pathway for above referenced, metallic sodium.
Background
Figure 1 is an excerpt from FFTF-14308 that summarizes the sodium sources, approximate quantities and storage configurations for the Hanford sodium inventory. The 2002 trade-off study was an evaluation between construction of a new facility at Hanford or use an existing facility at
DOE’s Idaho Site. The Idaho facility has been decommissioned and is no longer an option. In addition, the FFTF sodium has been removed from reactor coolant systems and fuel storage vessels and currently is stored in solid form in three 80,000 gallon, and one 52,000 gallon, steel tanks located in Hanford’s 400 Area.

Figure 1 Excerpt from FFTF-14308 Executive Summary
The disposition approach in 2002 was for conversion of bulk sodium to a 50 wt% sodium hydroxide solution for use on the Hanford Site. The trade-off study also considered production of
70wt% sodium hydroxide for disposal. The approach for conversion of bulk sodium to a sodium hydroxide product is the baseline disposition path against which developed alternatives will be compared to.
Request
The following are the areas of interest identified by CPCCo to update, and possibly expand, the approaches from the 2002 trade-off study.
1. Commercially viable process available to address large quantities of bulk metallic sodium.
2. Organization willing to accept radioactively contaminated materials.
Page 3 of 3 Form update 9/3/2024
3. Experience in design of facilities to handle and/or process large quantities of bulk metallic sodium.
4. Availability of turn-key systems for the conversion of bulk sodium to an aqueous sodium solution.
5. Existing capability to receive bulk sodium and treat (bulk sodium has low, measurable radiation dose).
6. Existing organization interested in developing capability to receive bulk sodium and treat
(bulk sodium has low, measurable radiation dose).
Information provided by interested companies will be used by CPCCo as input into a document that will be available to the public. Proprietary or company-sensitive information may be submitted along with clarification for how the information may be summarized for use in the
CPCCo document. CPCCo reserves the right to review and summarize submitted information in order to remove potential bias in the resulting CPCCo document.
Response Submission Deadline
Responses to this Call to Industry must be submitted no later than close of business June 19, 2025. Submissions will be accepted as e-mail attachments only. All responses must be sent to
Rayna Moe, at Rayna_R_Moe@rl.gov, with “Bulk Metallic Sodium” in the subject line.
Questions and Comments Regarding the Call to Industry
The Contractors shall submit any comments or questions regarding the Call to Industry to the
Contract Specialist in writing by June 9, 2025. The Contractor may transmit questions and comments via e-mail. The Contract Specialist will answer all questions in writing and post all questions and answers on the CPCCo website.
