Bucking Mule Falls Trail #053 Reconstruction – Additional Info.

Bighorn National Forest

04/22/2020

Material for Puncheon supplied by the Government - The treated timbers, planks and boards that are required for the construction of the puncheon sections of trail are Government supplied. This material will be available for the Contractor at the Porcupine Ranger Station T56N, R91W, Sec. 18. This location is appox. 10 miles from the Bucking Mule Falls Trailhead.

Material for Puncheon supplied by the Contractor - The 3 - 12” dia. X 20’ stringers for use in the construction of the elevated puncheon will be cut on site by the Contractor under the approval of the Forest Service. This material will not require treatment. Hardware such as pins, nails, etc required to complete the construction of the puncheon sections will be supplied by the Contractor.

Treatment of Puncheon material – The Government supplied material is already treated. Some field cutting and drilling will be needed and those cuts and holes will require surface treatment by the Contractor. No treatment will be required on the native stringers that will be cut on site for the elevated puncheon.

Rock for Drain Dips – It is anticipated that the drain dips on this project will not require rock for their construction. If during construction it were determined that a drain dip could benefit from the use of rock that rock would be collected on site. The price for a rocked drain dip would at a negotiated price as it is not included in this contract.

Disposal of removed puncheon and other material – Existing material, that is to be removed, will become the property of the Contractor and disposed of “off Forest at an appropriate location”.

Blasting – This project involves the restoration of existing trail and it is not anticipated that blasting will be needed. The blasting specification was included in case the Contractor elected to blast as opposed to other methods of obtaining the required trail surface. As noted in the Project Notes under “Blasting” if the Contractor elected to blast that item is considered incidental to the pay item “Existing Trial Restoration”.

Signage – The Contractor shall install construction signing to alert the public to construction activities (posted 200 to 300 feet ahead of construction). The Forest Service will post signs at trailheads alerting the public to the project.

Equipment use – The use of trail construction equipment is allowed on this project. Existing conditions (grades, slopes and trail width) limit the use of equipment in many areas. In those areas construction will need to be accomplished by hand work. The existing trail will not accommodate equipment that is wider than 36” to 48”. The finished trail width is to be 24” so the Contractor should plan accordingly.

Use of closed road near Bucking Mule Falls Trailhead – This road would be available for use by the Contractor with written approval from the District Ranger. That approval may have stipulations on the use of that road such as time, days and ground conditions. This road is closed by a gate and the Contractor would be required to close the gate behind him.

Access to the site – Typically this site is not accessible to wheeled vehicles until the middle of June.

Dependent on snow conditions access could be as last as July 1st.

Rock Cairn – Rock for Cairns will be collected on site.

DUNs Expiration Date – Sue you might want to reiterate your answer on this one.
