3. Unique characteristics that limit availability to only one source, with the reason no other supplies or services can be used:

BRAND NAME ONLY: The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and its community-based outpatient clinics currently utilize Fujifilm Sonosite ultrasound systems and the request is for an additional Sonosite PX Ultrasound System. Standardizing this equipment is required due to implications related to patient safety and avoidance of unnecessary training and maintenance costs. Standardization of medical equipment has been shown to be a “best practice” for reducing risk of staff errors while providing patient care. Having one brand of equipment ensures staff members are confident in the operation and capabilities of the equipment.

Fujifilm Sonsite offers more exclusive features than its competitors that meet the requirements of the VA medical center’s staff using the equipment. Fujifilm Sonosite offers Auto SNP (Steep Needle Profiling) which helps in-plane needle visualization from multiple angles with one system interaction. The clinician simply advances the needle at the angle optimal to reach the target. They also offer intuitive touch panel and physical buttons for quick access to the most-used controls. The unique, raised buttons allow clinicians to make adjustments via feel. Sonosite PX can be operated with gloves and a sterile drape. Sonosite PX delivers the most advanced image clarity Sonosite has ever offered, aided by a new family of transducers, proprietary speckle reduction technology, and improved color performance. Adaptable horizontal to vertical work surface allows clinicians to adjust Sonosite PX for optimal bedside ergonomics and bring it closer to the bedside.
