Smartshooter SMASH Optic system Approval for use on M4/M16
The Air Force continues to struggle to provide kinetic solutions that are needed in order to effectively engage small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) that are actively threatening critical AF assets and missions. The currently fielded options are the M870 shotgun with Skynet rounds, which are limited to 50m effective range, and manual aiming with standard arms, which has a dismal probability of hitting a static or moving target beyond 20m.
Operators at will continue to have no ability to defeat sUAS threats beyond the effective range of 50m, or faster than 15mph with the skynet rounds, if they are even able to procure them.
The SMASH 2000 optic by Smartshooter enables precision engagement by a defender to engage air or ground targets with an incredibly high level of accuracy out to 200m. Use of the optic will be able to provide line-of-sight kinetic defeat of threatening sUAS in both day and night conditions. For Urgent Operational Need and austere locations, this is a temporary capability that can enhance existing weapon systems for increased ground target precision, as well as providing a line of defense against the sUAS threat.
(FOUO) The system is currently being fielded by the Countering Terrorist Technologies Support Office and the Army 5 SFG in OCONUS theaters. It has been demonstrated to the C-UAS Program office, the Small Arms program office, and several different CATM instructors at Ft. Campbell in KY, and has performed very favorably at all events.
