About this file
This is a Foundation Investigation Report prepared by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) Geotechnical Section for a new truck wash facility at the Nashua Maintenance Facility in Platte County, Missouri. The project involves construction of a 30 by 55 feet truck wash structure to replace an existing 45 by 60 feet fabric truck wash. The investigation was conducted in February 2025 following a request dated November 18, 2024, and the report was completed on June 17, 2025. Three soil borings were performed at the site (NE, NW, and SE locations), with the SW boring omitted due to the presence of unmarked and private buried sewer utilities. Site visit attendance is mandatory for bid acceptance, and interested bidders must contact the buyer of record, Logan Wilbers at logan.wilbers@modot.mo.gov, five business days before bid closing if submitting a hard copy bid. Bids will be received electronically through MissouriBUYS or by mail, UPS, or FedEx.
The geotechnical investigation established that a net allowable maximum bearing capacity of 2,000 pounds per square foot (psf) may be used for the proposed structure, with estimated settlement expected to be less than one inch. All three borings encountered fill materials underlain by lean clays and sands, with the NW Boring encountering a calcareous boulder at 10.6 feet depth causing auger refusal. Key recommendations include complete removal of the existing structure and all deleterious fill materials such as asphalt, concrete debris, and crushed aggregate; proof rolling of cut and fill areas with a fully loaded tandem axle dump truck; use of lean clay or granular fill material compacted to 95 percent of standard proctor maximum dry density; shallow foundation embedment a minimum of 30 inches below finished grade for frost protection; minimum footing widths of 2.5 feet for individual spread footings and 1.5 feet for strip footings; and site grading designed to maintain positive drainage away from the building with minimum surface grades of 5 percent on gravel or landscape areas and 2 percent on paved surfaces.

SUBJECT: Foundation Investigation for New Truck Wash Job No. Fi3100 Nashua Maintenance Facility, Platte County
A foundation investigation has been conducted for a new 30 by 55 feet truck wash structure in Platte County for the Nashua Maintenance Facility, as requested by Randy Whyde on 18 November, 2024.
Attached are logs of borings for the subject project, an aerial photo showing boring locations, and a subsurface diagram. Coordinate and elevation data were provided by Kansas City District Survey.
Existing Conditions The building footprint is currently occupied by a 45 by 60 feet fabric truck wash structure. This structures and related infrastructure are expected to be removed before construction of the planned facility. The SW Boring was omitted from our investigation due to the presence of unmarked and private buried sewer utilities. In addition, a foundation investigation report completed for the existing structure indicated similar soil conditions, reinforcing our confidence in soil conditions with the omission of the SW boring.
All three borings encountered fill materials underlain by lean clays and sands. The NW Boring encountered a calcareous boulder at a depth of 10.6 feet which caused auger refusal at 11.7 feet.
Recommendations The following recommendations are based upon information provided regarding the proposed building and conditions observed during the foundation investigation. We understand the proposed facility has a standardized foundation system designed based on a maximum bearing pressure of 2,000 pounds per square foot (psf). A net allowable maximum bearing capacity of 2,000 psf may be used for the proposed structure at this location following the recommendations below. In addition, estimated settlement is expected to be less than one inch following these recommendations.
• The existing structure should be removed in its entirety, including subsurface elements. In addition, all overlying deleterious fill material such as asphalt, millings, concrete debris, and crushed aggregate base, including those exposed during demolition of existing structures should be over excavated and removed from the building site and should not be used as structural fill for the proposed building.
Fi3100 Nashua Truck Wash June 17, 2025
• After making any grading excavation and before any fill placement, proof roll all cut and fill areas with a fully loaded tandem axle dump truck. Any rutting or pumping soils should be over excavated and replaced with controlled fill.
• If the excavation exposes softer soils than encountered in borings, contact the Geotechnical Section. In this case it is likely the existing structure has influenced the soil strength and additional soil sampling, or subgrade evaluation may be necessary.
• It is recommended that any new fill material be lean clay or better. However, use of granular fill material is preferred if feasible. Fill should be compacted to 95% of standard proctor maximum dry density (ASTM D 698). Non-granular fill material should be compacted at a moisture content ranging from two percentage points below optimum moisture content to four percentage points above optimum moisture content as determined by ASTM D 698.
• Shallow foundations shall be embedded a minimum of 30 inches below finished grade for frost protection. Individual spread footings shall have a minimum width of 2.5 feet, while strip footings shall have a minimum width of 1.5 feet.
• Site grading should be designed to maintain positive drainage away from the building. We recommend a minimum surface grade of 5 percent away from the building on gravel or landscape areas in the first 10 feet outside the building. We recommend a minimum surface grade of 2 percent away from the building on all paved surfaces in the first 20 feet away from the building.
