SELECTION

JUSTIFICATION

The California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) is uniquely qualified to carry out these particular objectives of the Decontamination Units to Prevent Further Dreissenid Mussels Introduction and Spread in California. CDFW has been operating a multi-faceted Quagga/Zebra Mussel Project within their Invasive Species Program (ISP); this project mitigates future overland watercraft introductions of both adult and veliger dreissenid mussels. In this program they partner with other state, federal, local, and non-government organizations to intercept, inspect, and decontaminate conveyances (primarily trailered watercraft) carrying dreissenid mussels. CDFW has six dedicated regional scientists with specific experience coordinating stakeholder efforts. Their experience through the years of operation, provides them unique knowledge of state-wide issues and allows them to respond quickly and appropriately to provide efficient responses.
