2. Brief description of the supplies required, the intended use and estimated amount: The Pittsburgh VA Healthcare System has a new brand name requirement for a Ultima Pulmonary Functioning (PF) System. Pulmonary plethysmographs are used to measure the lungs' functional residual capacity (FRC), the lungs' volume when the muscles of respiration are relaxed, and total lung capacity. In a traditional plethysmograph (or "body box"), the patient is placed inside a sealed chamber with a small telephone booth with a single mouthpiece. At the end of normal expiration, the mouthpiece is closed. The patient is then asked to make an inspiratory effort. As the patient tries to inhale (a maneuver which looks and feels like panting), the lungs expand decreasing pressure within the lungs and increasing lung volume. It increases the box's pressure since it is a closed system, and the volume of the box compartment has decreased to accommodate the new volume of the subject.
The Ultima PF System offer maximum flexibility to configure both pulmonary function testing (PFT) and gas exchange testing. To perform plethysmograph testing, the pulmonary function testing lab will require the following system and software:
