5.2 Specific Characteristics of the Unique or Highly Specialized Item or Service:
6. Check all applicable statements:
The material or service must be compatible in all aspects (form, fit, function) with existing systems presently installed. The new product(s) / service(s) must coordinate, connect, or interface with existing systems.
A patent, copyright, proprietary data, or licensing agreement limits competition.
These are "direct replacement" parts/components for existing equipment.
For both systems, the primary concern is the highest available pulse energy to be able to process high melting point materials in a benchtop form with no special electrical requirements meeting the following technical requirements:
1. Small-Scale Pulsed Laser Welding System
System requirements:
- Benchtop size.
- Full enclosed operating chamber for safety.
- Be able to run from a regular power outlet at 110V.
Welding settings required:
- Pulse energy in the range of 1-140 J.
- Pulse repetition rate of up to 30 Hz.
- Pulse durations in the range of 0.5-10 ms.
2. Small-Scale Pulsed Arc Welding System
System requirements:
- Benchtop size.
- Be able to run from a regular power outlet at 110V.
- Microscope system to observe weld area.
- Easy to use controller.
Welding settings required:
- Pulse energy enough to melt all types of metal filaments.
- Automated pulse shaping (duration and energy) to improve weld microstructure.
6.1 Compatibility Statement:
6.2 Copyright / Proprietary Data / Licensing Agreement Statement:
The system from Sunstone & Orion Welders is compatible with lab space and electrical connections. The Orion Pulsed Arc Welder (200i) with a retracting electrode is the only product in the US found to meet the minimum requirements. The retracting electrode enables very small welds. For the laser welding system, Orion welders have the highest pulse energy in the market. It is critical that the system generates as much energy as possible to be able to work high temperature materials. The Orion 140 Joule Laser Welder with built in camera meets the minimum technical requirements for the welding system.
7. Brand Name (if applicable, detail why the procurement is restricted to a specific brand name manufacturer):
8. Additional information supporting a sole source acquisition:
Products are available directly with the OEM Orion Welders who is a subsidiary of Sunstone Engineering LLC or through resellers.
The Orion laser welding system or pulsed arc welder are not available on GSA or NASA SEWP. Alphalaser US VL50 Tabletop laser welder was reviewed; however, the pulse energy of 95 J is not meeting the minimum requirements of 140 J and the pulse frequency only goes up to 25 Hz.
