About this file

This is a bid specification document for SUNY Morrisville in New York detailing custom haylage chopping services. The college seeks a custom harvester to perform mowing, merging, chopping, hauling, and packing of approximately 150-200 acres per cutting for all harvests occurring between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027. The contractor must maintain the capability to respond within 48 hours of the college's harvest notification, as timeliness is critical due to narrow weather-dependent harvest windows required to maintain forage quality for the dairy's high-producing herd. The contractor must provide yield maps upon completion of each harvest and agrees to travel specified routes, with the college reserving the right to engage additional equipment or contractors if the primary contractor cannot meet the 48-hour response requirement.

The required equipment includes a large-capacity self-propelled chopper capable of applying inoculant (supplied by the college), large-capacity hay mowing machinery, a tractor with a minimum 30-foot-width merger, a minimum of four 10-wheel trucks with high-capacity silage boxes, and a large weighted blade/packing tractor. Bidding is on a per-hour basis for the chopper, merger, packing tractor, and trucks, with fuel costs included in the bid price. Transportation charges are limited to one-way equipment travel from the contractor's home station to the farm and one-way return travel. Dairy Support Services Co. Inc. is identified as a previous awardee for substantially similar services. No specific set-asides, SDVOB goals, MBE goals, or WBE goals are established for this procurement.

Haylage Chopping 2026

SUNY Morrisville Dairy is looking for a custom harvester to mow, merge, chop, haul, and pack approximately 150-200 acres (per cutting) of haylage. This would include all cuttings from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. The Morrisville dairy has and wishes to maintain a high producing herd which requires top quality forages. Timeliness of harvest is extremely important.

Custom harvesters must:

• Be able to provide a large capacity self-propelled chopper capable of applying inoculant

(Morrisville will provide the innoculant)

• Large capacity hay mowing machinery

• A tractor+ merger (minimum of 30 feet width)

• A minimum of four 10-wheel size trucks with high capacity silage boxes

• A large weighted blade/packing tractor,

• Must be able to provide yield maps on completion of harvest

• Be able to be ready within 48 hours of college’s need to harvest – college reserves the right to bring in another chopper if the custom harvester cannot get there within the 48 hour call. This is due to the time sensitive nature of the crop – with narrow harvest windows due to weather and quality, the crop must be harvested when it is ready.

• Must at most charge one way from the home station to the farm, and one way from the farm to the home station for trucks and equipment.

• Must travel specified routes.

• If the custom harvester is short on the required trucks due to labor or breakdowns, the college reserves the right to bring in additional trucks.

Haylage chopping must be bid on a per hour basis for chopper, merger, packing tractor, and trucks.

Please include fuel in the bid, as the college cannot provide it.

Trucks will use the most direct routes to and from the fields.
