Bid Sheet Antietam National Battlefield FY22 Purchase Cannon and Carriages 23 May 2022 Requirement:
Antietam National Battlefield needs to replace aging wooden artillery equipment that have been on display for over twenty years and are failing and unsafe. All new equipment will be made of aluminum and steel, enhancing the durability and lifespan of the equipment. Specifically, the park requires the purchase of the following artillery equipment:
1. 20 lb Parrott rifle barrel (20 lb. Parrot aluminum non firing barrel with 6" rifling)
2. #3 aluminum field carriage for 20 lb. Parrot
3. #1 aluminum carriage for 6 lb cannon barrel (park will mount historic tube)
4. Two Aluminum limbers with two limber chests
5. Aluminum Cassion with 2 limber chests and spare wheel Background:
This requirement supports the safety of visitors, resources, and staff by removing the wooden equipment before they cause damage to life or property. Antietam National Battlefield requires reproduction artillery equipment to safely and effectively tell the story artillery used during the bloodiest one-day battle in American history. There were over 520 cannons engaged in this battle, firing over 50,000 rounds of artillery in 12 hours of combat. The Park has cannon and their supporting equipment on display in the park to show the location of artillery and the different types of cannons.
The 20 lb. Parrott rifled cannon will be displayed directly in front of the park visitor center and will enhance the visitor appreciation and understanding of Civil War artillery. In addition, this will be the only sample of the largest cannon used during the Battle of Antietam and will enhance the complete rehabilitation of the visitor center which is expected to be completed in the fall of 2022.
Cannon carriages built to accommodate 19th century antique weapons are a small market, with only a few small businesses capable of filling the need, which requires an understanding of historic weapons, as well as a complex mix of trades and skills.
