PROCEDURE FOR WELL CLEANING & REHABILITATION
1. Intent of Procedure: The contractor shall furnish all necessary equipment, labor, and supplies to clean and redevelop the Meadow Well for Otsego County Building Services located in Cooperstown, NY. The procedure discussed below provides the steps that will be followed at each well.
2. Equipment: The Contractor shall furnish, deliver, and erect, at the site, all necessary rigging and miscellaneous equipment to accomplish the redevelopment. This will include a hydraulically operated crane capable of removing the motor and pump and satisfactorily handling the redevelopment equipment. This crane shall be capable of continuously providing such action as to surge the well redevelopment tools. The operation shall provide for a minimum stroke length of three feet with a frequency of up to thirty strokes per minute.
3. Preliminary Test: Prior to pulling the pumping equipment, the Contractor shall run a one-hour flow test through a calibrated orifice which he shall provide and temporarily install for this purpose. These results shall be compared against the well's original performance to determine the extent of well development needed.
During the test, specific attention shall be paid to flow rate, pump pressure, unusual vibrations, amperage draw, and voltage requirements.
Bid Ref No. OTGOV-012-26, Page 11 of 32
4. Removal Of Pump And Motor From Well: The Contractor shall remove the pump and motor from the well, taking all due precaution to avoid damaging the well house, well casings, seals, and pumping equipment. The pump shall be placed next to the pump house and be fully dismantled for viewing by the
Owner. A pre-cleaning television survey will then be conducted to help assess the condition of the well screen and casing (see Item 6 below).
5. Well Redevelopment: The Contractor shall rehabilitate the well using state-of-the-art techniques and equipment, including, but not limited to, wire brushing, surging, pumping, air lifting, bailing, chemicals, and
QC-21/Muriatic Acid Solution.
The following procedure should be followed in redeveloping and chemically treating the well:
A. With the understanding that a variety of chemical activities are required to dissolve and remove complex deposits, QC-21 Well Cleaner offers a unique polymer chemistry that provides the proper reactions to effectively clean the well environment. The use of state-of-the-art polymers greatly expands these activities over the conventional chemistry commonly used in well rehabilitation.
QC-21 effectively dissolves the deposit masses that generally occur in the screen and gravel pack area.
Although the components of these deposits are somewhat specific to the chemistry and biology of the aquifer, they usually include mineral precipitants, metal oxides, by-products of biological activity, and organic biomass. QC-21 Well Cleaner is completely safe to use in drinking water systems as indicated by its certification to stringent testing procedures under Standard 60 by NSF International.
The Contractor shall surge the well screen making complete passes through the producing zone, bringing the water over the top if possible to purge detached material from the well. A mixture of QC-
21, Muriatic Acid, and water will be pumped into the well through a line or hose that extends into the producing zone. Use the surge block to mix the chemicals thoroughly. The QC-21 acid solution shall then be surged in the well using a double block agitator for approximately four hours. Allow for overnight contact time, if possible.
B. While continuously surging the well, the QC-21 acid solution shall be pumped or air lifted to a portable pit erected by the Contractor which has a minimum capacity of 1500 gallons. Prior to discharging to waste, the QC-21 acid/water solution shall register a neutral pH. This may require the addition of chemicals (soda ash) supplied by the Contractor.
C. The contractor shall place in the well a quantity of sodium hypochlorite and an acidic non-ionic surfactant (Layne Oximate) to make pH buffered solution strength in the well screen and gravel pack equal to 250 ppm. Repeat surging and pumping, or air lifting, as indicated in steps I and II above.
Following the well disinfection, the solution will be pumped or air lifted to the portable pit. Prior to discharging to waste the solution will be treated with a chlorine neutralizer to ensure that no chlorine residual remains.
Bid Ref No. OTGOV-012-26, Page 12 of 32
After completing each phase of rehabilitation, and before proceeding to the next, conduct a short duration pumping test to determine the specific capacity of the well. The Contractor shall compile all test results prior to continuing and shall present those results to the Owner. A decision will then be made to continue with some form of further development or proceed with the permanent pump installation.
The volume of chemicals required to clean the well shall be based on the well depth and static water level.
6. Television Inspection: The contractor shall perform a television inspection of the well before and after the well rehabilitation. This will be completed with an underwater camera that would allow instantaneous viewing and recording. Particular attention would be paid to the casing joints and screen area. The owner will be presented with a recording of the inspections following the viewing.
7. Test of Well and Equipment: Following the installation of the pump in the well, the Contractor shall conduct a one-hour test of the well and its equipment, comparing the results of this test with the specific capacity of the well prior to its reconditioning. Voltage and amperage measurements shall be taken and recorded, together with pump discharge pressure, static and pumping water levels, and capacities at 3 operating points of the pump.
8. Report: Following completion of all work, a letter report detailing the work done, repair parts furnished, redevelopment procedures followed and the results of the redevelopment shall be made and submitted to the Owner.
General Notes
• The contractor shall furnish all labor, tools, materials and equipment required and necessary to complete the work required in the bid specification. However, it is the express intent of the contract documents to all for a complete and finished job, including all materials, equipment, accessories and incidental components, whether or not specifically described herein.
• Quantities are for estimating purposes only and must be verified in field. Dimensions of the work shall not be determined by scale or rule, but figured dimensions shall be followed at all times and verified in field. If dimensions cannot be readily determined by the information provided in this bid document, the County shall be contacted before proceeding with the work.
