Beartree Campground Well #3 Water System Description
TYPE OF TREATMENT:
Chlorination, Sedimentation, and Greensand Filtration (Iron and Manganese Removal) SOURCE: Existing Well DESIGN CAPACITY: 37,440 gallons per day (gpd) treatment capacity; 2183 gallons storage capacity
DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM:
System consists of an iron and manganese removal treatment plant and a 2183 gallon atmospheric storage tank. The treatment system provides chlorination, the addition of soda ash for pH adjustment, sedimentation, permanganate addition and filtration through a green sand filter.
The chlorination system is composed of a 50 gallon solution crock with graduations every 5 gallons and two metering pumps with a pumping range of 0.01 to 1 gallons per hour against 110 psi. The chlorine injection points are prior to the sedimentation tank and after filtration.
The soda ash feed system consists of a 50 gallon solution crock with graduations every 5 gallons and a tank-mounted ½ HP mixer. The pump capacity is the same as the chlorination metering pumps. The injection point for soda ash is prior to the sedimentation tank.
A 2-inch diameter in-line static mixer is provided downstream of the soda ash and chlorine injection points.
The sedimentation tank is a hydro pneumatic tank with a volume of 1560 gallons. A separate 2-inch inlet and outlet is provided. Tank appurtenances include a sight glass, 2-inch drain, 11-inch by 15-inch access manhole, a pressure relief valve and an air release valve. This tank provides 60 minutes of detention time. The inlet/outlet end of the tank is located inside the treatment building while the rest of the tank extends out of the building.
The potassium permanganate feed system is composed of a 50 gallon solution crock with graduations every 5 gallons and an electric mixer and a metering pump with the same capacity as the chlorination metering pumps. The permanganate injection point is prior to the filter.
The filtration system consists of one green sand filter. The filters have a filtering capacity of 26 gallons per minute (3.68 gpm/sq. ft.) and 36 inches in diameter. The filter media consists of 29 inches of green sand and 15.25 inches of anthracite. Sample taps are provided at the filter inlet, at a point ½ down the greensand bed, at the greensand/anthracite interface and after filtration. Filter appurtenances are included a loss of head gauge, access hatch, raw water meter, filtered water meter, backwash water meter and an air release valve.
The filter effluent is delivered through a 2-inch diameter waterline to 3 existing storage tanks located on the hill above the treatment building.
Backwashing of the filter is accomplished by gravity from the storage tanks and controlled by a rate-of-flow control valve. The maximum backwash rate is 99 gpm (14 gpm/sq. ft.). Backwash water is discharged to an existing sand drying bed followed by a drain field adjacent to the treatment plant. Control of the backwash cycle is via a time clock. There is a RPZ-type backflow preventer on the backwash water supply line.
Control of the well, chemical feed systems and filtration system is via an electrode that monitors the water level in the storage tanks.
The treatment plant is located in a framed building located adjacent to the existing well building. It is equipped with a concrete floor with 4-inch diameter floor drain, a ventilation system, a heater, light and a sink.
Piping is provided between the 3 storage tanks such that the water will enter the 6000 gallon tank before entering the 2450 gallon tank and finally entering the 2183 gallon tank. Additional piping allows any of the tanks to be taken out of service for maintenance.
The waterworks capacity is evaluated as follows:
Source Capacity
Well Capacity = 69 gpm (Purported Yield) x 1440 minutes/day = 99,360 gpd
Well Pump Capacity = 26 gpm x 1440 minutes/day = 37,440 gpd
Treatment Capacity
Hydraulic limit = (26 gpm) (1440 minutes/day) = 37,440 gpd
Based on well pump capacity of 26 gpm and filtration rate of 3.68 gpm/sq. ft.
Storage Capacity
Total Effective Volume = 10,633 gallons
