1. Background
The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) facilitates collaborative partnerships between the Department of War (DoW), venture-backed technology companies, and other non-traditional innovation communities to expand the national security innovation base and address national security challenges. Doing so enables the DoW to leverage its unique acquisition process, reducing procurement timelines, and accelerating the integration of commercial solutions into defense operations. The DIU enterprise encompasses expertise, capabilities, and relationships across several commercial technology areas; public and private sectors; academia; and other communities of interest both United States (U.S.)-based and internationally.
In 2023, the Secretary of War (SecWar) realigned the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to report directly to the SecWar, reinforcing its role as the DoW’s primary gateway for commercial technology adoption. With offices in Silicon Valley at Mountain View, CA (MV), and the National Capital Region around Washington DC (NCR), DIU serves as the DoW’s central hub for engaging commercial innovators.
