About this file

This document is a template for a Biological Assessment for Threatened and Endangered Species prepared by the USDA Forest Service. The template provides guidance for creating a report document, demonstrating proper formatting, heading styles, and document structure. It includes placeholder Lorem Ipsum text to show how different sections and subsections should be formatted, with examples of Heading 1 through Heading 9 styles. The template is designed to help Forest Service employees create consistent, accessible documents that reflect the agency's professional standards.

The document emphasizes the importance of using Word styles for maintaining document consistency and accessibility, particularly for creating 508-compliant documents. It provides instructions on using paragraph and section breaks, and includes a civil rights statement detailing USDA's non-discrimination policies. The template serves as a technical guide for report preparation, suggesting that authors consult with supervisors and potentially work with visual information specialists for more complex publications. The cover page features an image of the La Sal Mountains on the Manti-La Sal National Forest, demonstrating how images can be incorporated into the document.

This template is intended for simple reports or publications. If your report should include multiple images, tables, charts, etc., consider coordinating with a visual information specialist or graphic designer with access to professional design software. Any report or publication should be discussed with your supervisor or program director, who can help you determine the appropriate level of clearance. As a Forest Service employee, products you create reflect the agency, our Department, and the entire Federal Government.

To use this template, you should know how to use styles in Word. These paragraphs use the Body Text style. Styles control your font type, font size, paragraph spacing, and more.

The table of contents is created and updated based on the three heading styles in this document. (Note: Click within the table of contents and an option appears to “Update Table.”) Styles give your report a consistent appearance and are important when making accessible (508-compliant) documents.

This template also uses several section and page breaks. They can be seen by clicking the paragraph symbol (¶) in the menu above, which will show all formatting marks in the document. If you are trying to change the cover image or other elements on the first few pages, but experiencing odd formatting results, it is likely due to one of these breaks (or the text style’s paragraph spacing). There is a page break after this paragraph, which ends the page and starts text on the following page.
