USAID/Nepal EGRP Results
• 5551,439 learners; 5,017 schools, 14,311 teachers, and
8,099 school administrators trained
• Over 10 million education materials distributed
• 1,500 SMC grants
• NEGRP core document, institutionalize NEGRP in
SSDP and increase support from other donors
• Development of minimum package, instructional materials in both Nepali and mother tongue and Reading benchmarks
Considerations for Literacy programs under USDA FFE
● Consideration of geographic overlap between NEGRP districts;
● Where NEGRP is present- focus on added support outside of EGR minimum package (e.g. support to local Governments, teacher professional support, reading motivators, community engagement, and book corners)
● Increase support to literacy component as there is a substantial increase in budget support for school meals by GON in this year’s fiscal year budget
● Full coverage of all schools in municipalities supported with school meals program rather than select schools
● Adherence to the national early grade reading program minimum package and guidelines
● Adapt program to federalism context
● Adapt program to integrated curriculum- How can this program support roll out of IC?
● Support resources classes and children with disabilities; apply learning and approaches and materials from USAID’s Reading For All and World Education
USAID/Nepal Education Development Office:
Considerations in the context of COVID 19
● Many of the districts in which USDA operates are some of the most severely affected by COVID with high numbers of cases, potential long-term school closures, high number of returned migrants, huge economic impact and food insecurity because of loss of remittances and extended lockdown
● Continued support to teachers and learners in the area of digital literacy;
expand the digital literacy pilot
● Consider how to adapt programming given school closures and lockdowns, e.g. virtual teacher training
● Align with the MOEST Contingency plan and Global Partnership for
Education programming to expand approaches
