SPECIFICATIONS FOR ADA MODULAR BOARDWALK SUPPLIES

Key specifications include a minimum uniform live load capacity of 100 pounds per square foot; hot-dip galvanizing per ASTM A123/A153 with minimum 3.9 mils zinc coating; stainless steel hardware suitable for marine environments; Posi-Loc® and Posi-Trus® connection systems with removable pin-hinge assemblies; ASTM A500 structural steel frames; and vertical height adjustment capability using 3/8-inch set bolts and 2-1/4-inch self-tapping screws per leg. Materials must comply with ADA and ABA Accessibility Standards, International Building Code requirements, and AWPA UC4B pressure treatment standards.

Deliverables include manufacturer technical data sheets, detailed installation requirements, shop drawings, structural calculations demonstrating live load compliance, AWS certification for all welders, U.S. steel origin certification, and Wisconsin business registration proof. For "or equal" products, bidders must provide detailed side-by-side comparisons demonstrating equivalency or superiority and compatibility with existing NPS-installed components. The manufacturer must provide lifetime warranty coverage on galvanized steel frame workmanship under normal use conditions, with defective components repaired or replaced at no cost to the original owner. Materials must be delivered to 37705 Roy's Point Blvd, Bayfield, WI 54814 within 60 calendar days after contract award, with delivery arrangements coordinated no less than one week in advance. SPECIFICATIONS FOR ADA MODULAR BOARDWALK

SUPPLIES

Project: Modular Boardwalk Supply (Materials Only) Location: Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Wisconsin Delivery Address: 37705 Roy’s Point Blvd, Bayfield, WI 54814

These specifications establish the minimum technical requirements for furnishing prefabricated modular ADA-compliant boardwalk components. Specifications are based on the Wickcraft Company connecting system. This is a brand name or equal requirement. Proposed “or equal” systems shall meet or exceed all stated physical, structural, material, connection, durability, and performance requirements and shall be fully interchangeable with the existing system installed between 2015–2025.

PART 1 – GENERAL

ITEM 1 – SECTION INCLUDES

1.01 Scope of Supply

Furnish a complete modular boardwalk system consisting of galvanized structural steel frames, adjustable non-penetrating support legs, pressure-treated wood decking, ADA-compliant toe rails, and all associated hardware, fittings, fasteners, and accessories required to form a complete and functional system in accordance with these specifications and applicable codes.

The work under this procurement is materials only. Installation will be performed by National Park Service personnel.

ITEM 2 – SUBMITTALS

2.01 Product Data

Submit the following for review and approval: - Manufacturer’s technical data sheets for all system components - Detailed installation requirements and system limitations - Shop drawings for deck panels, frame sections, legs, sleeves, baseplates, and connection hardware - Structural calculations demonstrating compliance with required live load capacities - Certification that all welders are American Welding Society (AWS) certified - Certificate of steel origin confirming steel produced in the United States - Proof of business registration and good standing with the State of Wisconsin

2.02 Approved Equal Submittals

For “or equal” products, must provide a detailed side-by-side comparison clearly demonstrating equivalency or superiority to the specified system, including compatibility with existing NPS-installed boardwalk components.

PART 2 – PRODUCTS

ITEM 3 – MATERIAL AND PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

3.01 Quantity and Configuration

- 375 each prefabricated modular boardwalk panels - Nominal panel size: 4 feet wide x 6 feet long

3.02 Decking

- Decking shall consist of 2x6 pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) - Pressure treatment shall meet AWPA UC4B minimum for ground-contact exposure - Decking shall support a minimum uniform live load of 100 pounds per square foot (psf) in accordance with the International Building Code (IBC) - All deck boards shall be fastened from below, with no exposed fasteners on the walking surface

3.03 Toe Rails and ADA Compliance

- Provide 2x4 pressure-treated SYP ADA-compliant toe rails on all required edges - Walking surface, slopes, transitions, and clear widths shall comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and ABA Accessibility Standards

3.04 Structural Frame System

- Frames fabricated from ASTM A500 structural steel - Connection plates fabricated from ¼-inch ASTM A36 structural steel - Frame system shall be designed for a minimum 100 psf live load plus dead load, with appropriate safety factors

3.05 Connections and Interchangeability

- Frame connections shall utilize Posi-Loc® and Posi-Trus® connection systems or approved equal - All connections shall be fully interchangeable with existing installed systems - Connections shall utilize removable pin-hinge assemblies, allowing mid-span removal of frame sections for maintenance without full system disassembly

3.06 Support Legs and Adjustability

- Legs and leg sleeves fabricated from ASTM A500 structural steel pipe - Legs, frames, and baseplates shall be separate components to facilitate transportation, staging, and installation - System shall allow vertical height adjustment for field leveling - Height adjustments shall be mechanically secured using 3/8-inch set bolts and two (2) 2-1/4-inch self-tapping screws per leg-

3.07 Galvanizing and Finish

- Entire post-fabrication frame assembly shall be hot-dip galvanized (HDG) in accordance with ASTM A123/A153 - Minimum zinc coating thickness: 3.9 mils - All post-galvanized components shall be hand-rasped to remove sharp edges without compromising galvanizing integrity

3.08 Hardware

- All hardware, including bolts, nuts, washers, pins, and deck screws, shall be stainless steel suitable for exterior and marine-influenced environments

ITEM 4 – WARRANTY

4.01 Structural Frame Warranty

- Manufacturer shall warrant workmanship of all galvanized steel frame components against defects for the lifetime of the boardwalk - “Lifetime” is defined as the duration the product remains in active service - At the manufacturer’s discretion, defective components shall be repaired or replaced at no cost to the original owner under normal use conditions

4.02 Exclusions

- Decking, handrails, toe rails, and other non-frame components shall carry the original manufacturer’s standard material warranties

4.03 Warranty Backing

Vendor shall demonstrate capacity to support warranty obligations through documented years of operation, financial stability, and operational infrastructure.

PART 3 – EXISTING TRAIL FOOTPRINT AND COORDINATION

ITEM 5 – EXISTING BOARDWALK COMPATIBILITY

5.01 Aesthetic and System Compatibility

- New boardwalk components shall visually and functionally match existing NPS boardwalk systems installed between 2015 and 2025 - Finish, proportions, and connection geometry shall be consistent with existing installations

5.03 Post-Delivery Coordination

- Supplier shall provide follow-up technical support as needed to certify that delivered materials meet safety and performance requirements

DELIVERY REQUIREMENTS

• Deliver materials to: 37705 Roy’s Point Blvd, Bayfield, WI 54814

• Delivery shall occur within 60 calendar days after contract award

• Delivery arrangements shall be coordinated no less than one (1) week in advance
