Replace Shake Shingles at Freeman School
SECTION 073129

WOOD SHINGLES
PART 1 - GENERAL
SCOPE OF WORK: Work consists of removal and replacement of the existing cedar shake shin-gled roof on the Freeman school, Coal Shed and Girls Privy, to include ) Ice Shield (Bitumen membrane) underlayment, drainage layer, flashing, and installation of a new roof that shall be Cedar shake. No alternative may be used. This must be a Cedar Shingle at this location. Proper nails with 50-year, rust resistant must be used to install shingles.
• Impact Test, UL 2218, Class 4
• Wind Test, ASTM D 3161, Certified to 110+ MPH
• Cedar Shakes as determined by COR.
• 30-year warranty
1.1 B. Remove, dispose, and replace approximately 1035 square foot on the Freeman School additional 275 Square foot on the coal shed and 50 Square foot on the Girls outhouse. A total of approximately 1360 Square feet of shingles need to be replaced at this location. Roofing (felt/underlayment) to include the old flashing materials, the replacement roof shall be installed as per manufacturer’s recommendations for warranty purposes. And shall include ice and water shield as a whole roof underlayment system. New roof must have a 4 3/4inch shingle exposer
A. Project Location: Homestead National Historical Park, 8523 West State Hwy 4, Freeman School Complex, Beatrice Nebraska, 68310
B. Building(s) Name/Identifier: Freeman School Complex
C. Work consists of the following:
1. Full tear-off of roof system at areas indicated on Drawings or in Photographs provided.
a. Removal of existing roofing system down to existing roof deck.
2. Re-cover preparation of entire roof area where tear-off occurs, including installation of new roofing system.
3. Removal of flashings and counter flashings.
4. Temporary roofing during construction where required. Temporary roofing shall maintain the project roof is watertight and able to prevent leaks and damage to the building and structure until the reroofing work is completed. Contractor is to make sure that at the completion of work each day the projects roof is 100% watertight.
5. Remove and replace the existing wood shingle roof system and associated roof flashings, down to deck and patch any openings in the structural decking as required before installing the new roof system, associated metal roof flashings and trims.

6. National Park Service (NPS) requires the existing roof decks to be walked after demolition has been completed with their onsite Contracting Office Representative (COR) ( or designated Project Inspector prior to installation of any new roof materials to ascertain if any water penetration has caused deterioration or corrosion of the existing decks which are to remain. If there are areas of concern the COR may require the Contractor to perform pull out tests to determine if the existing decking in question can remain or if it will need to be replaced. This can include visible areas of water damage or insect related damage. Testing and replacement of these types of unforeseen damaged areas will be by Change Order if required.
D. Roof Area:
1. Note the Contractor shall field verify roof dimensions prior to bidding.

1.7 SUBMITTAL COORDINATION
A. Submittal List: A submittal list has been attached to the end of this Specification Section. The intent is to provide an overall summary of the submittal requirements and not a comprehensive list. The requirements of the individual Specification Sections, terms and conditions of the Contract still apply regardless of what is shown on the submittal list.
1.8 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Installer Qualifications: Cedar Shake and Single Bureau (CSSB) member.

B. Grading Agency Qualifications: An independent testing and inspecting agency recognized by authorities having jurisdiction as qualified to label wood products for compliance with referenced grading rules.
1.9 WARRANTY
A. Materials Warranty: Manufacturer's warranty administered by CSSB and on CSSB's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace CSSB-labeled products that fail in materials within specified warranty period. Material failures include manufacturing defects that result in leaks.
1. Materials Warranty Period: Limited lifetime from date of Substantial Completion.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Exterior Fire-Test Exposure: Provide roofing materials identical to those of assemblies tested for fire resistance in accordance with American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) E108 or UL 790 by Underwriters Laboratories or another testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency.
1. Wood Products: Class B.
a. Fire-Retardant Treatment: Exterior-type pressure treatment complying with American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) U1 and AWPA T1.
b. Accelerated Weathering: Subject test specimens to ASTM D2898 Method A before testing.
c. Identification: Attach a label to each bundle of wood products; include identification mark of testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction and identify manufacturer, chemical treatment, method of application, purpose of treatment, and warranties available.
B. Grading Rules: Provide wood products that comply with CSSB grading rules for products indicated.
1. Identification: Attach a label to each bundle of wood products that identifies manufacturer, type of product, grade, dimensions, and identification mark of grading agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.
2.2 WOOD ROOF SHINGLES
A. Cedar Shingles: Smooth-sawn western red cedar shingles.
1. Grade: No. 1, with starter courses of No. 1.
2. Exposure:
a. Roof Slopes 3:12 to 4:12: 4-1/4 inches (110mm) maximum.
b. Roof Slopes 4:12 and Steeper: 5-1/4 inches (140mm) maximum.
3. Size: 18 inches (457 mm) long; 0.45 inch (11 mm) thick at butt.

B. Cedar Shingle Ridge Units: Manufactured, smooth-sawn western red cedar caps for ridges and hips of same thickness as shingles, 7 inches (178 mm) wide; beveled, alternately overlapped, and nailed.
1. Grade: No. 1.
2. Length: 16 inches (406 mm), or 18 inches (457 mm) as recommended for the roof application by the manufacturer.
2.3 UNDERLAYMENT MATERIALS
A. Ice Shield (Bitumen membrane): , nonperforated and complying with the following:
1. ASTM D3767, D412, D1970, D903, E96, D461: 40 mil
2. Use as underlayment.
3. Minimum Net Free Area: 18 sq. in. per ft.
2.4 ACCESSORIES
A. Roofing Nails: ASTM F1667, stainless steel, Type 304, or stainless steel, Type 316 box-type wire nails, sharp pointed, and of sufficient length to penetrate a minimum of 3/4 inch (19 mm) into sheathing or to penetrate through roof sheathing less than 3/4 inch (19 mm) thick.
1. Where nails are in contact with metal flashing, use nails made from same metal as flashing.
B. Asphalt Roofing Cement: ASTM D4586/D4586M Type II, asbestos free.

D. Drainage Mat: Manufacturer’s standard, compression-resistant, three-dimensional, nonwoven, entangled filament, nylon mat design to permit air movement and to drain incidental moisture by gravity.
2.5 SELECTIVE DEMOLITION
A. General: Demolish and remove existing construction only to the extent required by new construction and as indicated. Use methods required to complete the Work within limitations of governing regulations and as follows:
1. Full Roof Tear-off: Removal of existing roofing system down to existing roof deck or structure.
2. Temporarily protect existing roofing system and components that are to remain as required from damage.
3. Do not remove more roof than can be replaced in a day, and the roof will be made watertight each night.
4. Remove debris and materials so as not to impose excessive loads on supporting roof, structure or framing.
5. Dispose of demolished items and materials promptly.
B. Removed and Reinstalled Items:
1. Clean and repair items to functional condition adequate for intended reuse.
2. Reinstall items in locations indicated, or in original locations as required. Comply with installation requirements for new materials and equipment. Provide connections, WOOD SHINGLES 073129 - 5 supports, and miscellaneous materials necessary to make item functional for use indicated.
C. Inspect deck after tear-off of roofing system.
1. If broken or loose fasteners that secure deck panels to one another or to structure are observed, or if deck appears or feels inadequately attached, immediately notify COR.
a. Do not proceed with installation until directed by COR.
2. If deck surface is unsuitable for receiving new roofing or if structural integrity of deck is suspect, immediately notify COR.
a. Do not proceed with installation until directed by COR.
D. Disposal of Demolished Materials:
1. General: Except for items or materials indicated to be reused, salvaged, reinstalled, or otherwise indicated to remain NPS's property, remove demolished materials from Project site.
a. Do not allow demolished materials to accumulate on-site.
b. Remove and transport debris in a manner that will prevent spillage on adjacent surfaces and areas.
2. Burning: Do not burn demolished materials.
3. Disposal: Transport demolished materials off NPS's property and legally dispose of them.
E. Cleaning:
1. Clean adjacent structures and improvements of dust, dirt, and debris caused by selective demolition operations. Return adjacent areas to condition existing before selective demolition operations began.
F. Miscellaneous Materials:
1. General: Provide materials and types of fasteners, solder, protective coatings, sealants, and other miscellaneous items as required for complete sheet metal flashing and trim installation and as recommended by manufacturer of primary sheet metal or manufactured item unless otherwise indicated.
2. Fasteners: Wood screws, annular threaded nails, self-tapping screws, self-locking rivets and bolts, and other suitable fasteners designed to withstand design loads and recommended by manufacturer of primary sheet metal or manufactured item.
a. General: Blind fasteners or self-drilling screws, gasketed, with hex-washer head.
1) Exposed Fasteners: Heads matching color of sheet metal using plastic caps or factory-applied coating. Provide metal-backed Ethylene Propylene Diene

Monomer (EPDM) or Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) sealing washers under heads of exposed fasteners bearing on weather side of metal.
2) Blind Fasteners: High-strength aluminum or stainless-steel rivets suitable for metal being fastened.
b. Fasteners for Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) or Aluminum-Zinc Alloy-Coated Steel Sheet: Series 300 stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized steel according to ASTM A 153/A 153M or ASTM F 2329.
3. Sealant Tape: Pressure-sensitive, 100 percent solids, polyisobutylene compound sealant tape with release-paper backing. Provide permanently elastic, non-sag, nontoxic, non-staining tape 13 mm (1/2 inch) wide and 3 mm (1/8 inch) thick.
4. Elastomeric Sealant: ASTM C 920, elastomeric polymer sealant; of type, grade, class, and use classifications required to seal joints in sheet metal flashing and trim and remain watertight.
5. Butyl Sealant: ASTM C 1311, single-component, solvent-release butyl rubber sealant;
polyisobutylene plasticized; heavy bodied for hooked-type expansion joints with limited movement.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION OF UNDERLAYMENT MATERIALS
A. Comply with underlayment manufacturer's written installation instructions and with recommendations in CSSB's "New Roof Construction Manual" and National Roofing Contractors Association’s (NRCA's) "The NRCA Roofing Manual: Steep-Slope Roof Systems" applicable to products and applications indicated unless more stringent requirements are specified in the Section or indicated on Drawings.

C. Install Self-Adhering, Polymer-Modified Bitumen Sheet: Install, wrinkle free as a whole roof underlayment system.
1. Comply with low-temperature installation restrictions of underlayment manufacturer.
2. Install lapped in direction that sheds water.
3. Lap sides not less than 4 inches (102 mm). Lap ends not less than 6 inches (152 mm), staggered 24 inches (610 mm) between succeeding courses.
4. Roll laps with roller.
5. Prime concrete, masonry, and metal surfaces to receive self-adhering sheet if required in writing by the manufacturer for installation of their underlayment.
6. Cover underlayment within seven days.
7. Solidly cement valley underlayment to roof-field underlayment that is woven through valley using asphalt roofing cement.
D. General Installation:

1. General: Anchor sheet metal flashing and trim and other components of the Work securely in place, with provisions for thermal and structural movement. Use fasteners, solder, protective coatings, separators, sealants, and other miscellaneous items as required to complete sheet metal flashing and trim system.
a. Install sheet metal flashing and trim true to line, levels, and slopes. Provide uniform, neat seams with minimum exposure of solder, welds, and sealant.
b. Install sheet metal flashing and trim to fit substrates and to result in watertight performance. Verify shapes and dimensions of surfaces to be covered before fabricating sheet metal.
c. Space cleats not more than 300 mm (12 inches) apart. Attach each cleat with at least two fasteners. Bend tabs over fasteners.
d. Install exposed sheet metal flashing and trim with limited oil canning, and free of buckling and tool marks.
e. Torch cutting of sheet metal flashing and trim is not permitted.
f. Do not use graphite pencils to mark metal surfaces.
2. Metal Protection: Where dissimilar metals contact each other, or where metal contacts pressure-treated wood or other corrosive substrates, protect against galvanic action or corrosion by painting contact surfaces with bituminous coating or by other permanent separation as recommended by sheet metal manufacturer or cited sheet metal standard.
a. Coat concealed side of sheet metal flashing and trim with bituminous coating where flashing and trim contact wood, ferrous metal, or cementitious construction.
b. Underlayment: Where installing sheet metal flashing and trim directly on Cementitious or wood substrates, install underlayment and cover with slip sheet.
3. Expansion Provisions: Provide for thermal expansion of exposed flashing and trim. Space movement joints at maximum of 3 m (10 feet) with no joints within 600 mm (24 inches) of corner or intersection.
a. Form expansion joints of intermeshing hooked flanges, not less than 25 mm (1 inch) deep, filled with sealant concealed within joints.
b. Use lapped expansion joints only where indicated on Drawings.
4. Fasteners: Use fastener sizes that penetrate substrate not less than recommended by fastener manufacturer to achieve maximum pull-out resistance.
5. Conceal fasteners and expansion provisions where possible in exposed work and locate to minimize possibility of leakage. Cover and seal fasteners and anchors as required for a tight installation.
6. Seal joints as required for watertight construction.
a. Embed hooked flanges of joint members not less than 1 inch into sealant.
b. Form joints to completely conceal sealant.
c. When ambient temperature at time of installation is between 40 and 70 deg F, set joint members for 50 percent movement each way. Adjust setting proportionately for installation at higher ambient temperatures.
d. Do not install sealant-type joints at temperatures below 40 deg F.
3.2 INSTALLATION OF WOOD ROOF SHINGLES
A. General: Install wood roof shingles in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions and recommendations in CSSB's "New Roof Construction Manual" and NRCA's "The NRCA Roofing Manual: Steep-Slope Roofing Systems."

B. Install wood-shingle starter course along lowest roof edge.
1. Install in single layer.
2. Extend 1 inch (25 mm) over fascia.
3. Extend 1 inch (25 mm) over rake edge.
C. Install first course of wood roof shingles directly over starter course and in continuous straight-line courses across roof deck. Install second and succeeding courses of wood roof shingles in continuous straight-line courses across roof deck.
1. Extend 1 inch (25 mm) over rake edge.
2. Offset joints between shingles in succeeding courses a minimum of 1-1/2 inches (38 mm). Do not align vertical joints in alternate courses.
3. Space shingles a minimum of 1/4 inch (6 mm) and a maximum of 3/8 inch (10 mm) apart.
4. Fasten each shingle with two nails spaced 3/4 to 1 inch (19 to 25 mm) from edge of shingle and 1-1/2 to 2 inches (38 to 51 mm) above butt line of succeeding course. Drive fasteners flush with top surface of shingles without crushing wood. Increase as required to meet all criteria listed herein.
