SERVICE GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

PART 1 – GENERAL

ITEM 1 – LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION OF WORK

1.1 Background: Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield acquired the Double Springs property in 2006 and at that time was a working modern farm. Since that time most of the structures have been removed, leaving several concrete foundations, an early 1900s era farmhouse and a few small structures. It is the intent of

Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield to remove these modern structures and foundations and restore this area to its natural state.

1.2 Work Covered by the Contract Documents:

Project Location: The project location will be located at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield in two separate sites. The main park address is 6424 West FR 182 Republic Mo 65738. The majority of the work will take place at the Double Springs Farm location and one structure near the Maintenance Complex of Wilson’s

Creek National Battlefield. See exhibits 1 and 2 for detailed site maps and locations.

Work consists of: This project will include removal of early 1900s era farmhouse, permanent well abandoning / capping (2 ea.), removal of associated septic tank, and removal of vacated adjacent structures and foundations. (See exhibits 3, 4 and 5 for structure locations, detailed work descriptions and pictures.)

A National Park Service archeologist will monitor the removal of these structures. If they feel the project needs to stop due to uncovered artifacts or culturally significant items are located, they will immediately notify the site supervisor and the COR and work will stop immediately. Following removal of structures, any remaining fill gravel will be removed, and the remaining holes will be filled, leveled, and graded using clean soil with at least a 4-inch top layer of clean topsoil. All fill soil will be provided by the contractor and inspected by COR. Soil will be free of any contaminants, construction debris, and have no rocks over 4 inches in diameter. New soil will be compacted to insure there is no settling or ground erosion. If there is any noticeable settling after one year the contractor will be required to refill, compact, and reseed in those areas.

All groundwork will present a natural appearance and blend in with existing contour of the ground. Finally, the entire work area will be reseeded using a blend of native grasses harvested in SW Missouri or an approved equal, (Big Blue Stem, Little Blue Stem / Indian Grass Mixture) and covered in good clean straw.

There are 19 various locations that will need to be addressed and removed. Eighteen of these locations are located within a five-acre perimeter at the Double Springs Farm. The remaining location is located approximately 3 miles to the north, inside the maintenance complex of Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield.

See the attached maps, tables, and pictures to identify the different locations and work to be completed. All measurements are estimates and must be field verified by contractor.

Structure six has been tested and did test positive for asbestos in the underlayment for the flooring in the kitchen and lead in the paint on some of the exterior siding. The contractor will be required to dispose of the asbestos and lead paint areas according to the State of Missouri and Federal laws.

Structures 5.2 and 7 both contain an existing well. Contractor will be required to cap and fill these wells in accordance with Department of Natural Resources and the State of Missouri.
