Fire Equipment Identification and Numbering Standard
The BLM Fire Equipment Identification and Numbering Standard consists of four components: Bureau/State/District Identifier, Equipment Identifier (numerical/alpha numeric), Location Based Service (LBS) Identifier, and striping.
Bureau/State/District Identifier:
The Bureau/State/District Identifier consists of the following:
1. BLM emblem centered on the front passenger and driver cab doors. Emblem size varies dependent upon class of equipment.
2. “BLM FIRE” aligned with the top of the BLM Emblem on the front passenger and driver cab doors.
3. Two-character state identifier and the three-character district identifier (centered below the BLM Emblem) on the front passenger and driver cab doors.
4. Command class equipment also requires BLM FIRE (passenger side of tailgate, set within striping) and two-character state identifier / three-character district identifier (bottom driver side of tailgate).
Equipment Identifier The equipment identifier is the numerical or alpha numeric graphic identifier that is placed on the equipment. The equipment identifier is displayed on the front, rear, each side, and on the top of the equipment. For all fire equipment, except for engines and dozers, the equipment identifier consists of a four-digit number preceded by alphabetical character(s). For engines and dozers, the equipment identifier consists of only the four-digit number.
The Equipment Identifier consists of the following:
1. An alphabetical designator to identify command position or resource type (see Table 1).
2. Digit 1: District Number (single digit that identifies the district W/I the State)
3. Digit 2: Equipment Type Number (single digit that identifies the type of equipment (see
Table 1)
4. Digit 3 and 4: Equipment Number (a two-digit number, 01-99, that is assigned by the district)

Location Based Service Identifier:
The Location Based Services (LBS) Identifier will be displayed within the LBS web viewer.
The four numerical characters in LBS will match the four-digit equipment identifier in all cases.
The LBS Identifier consists of:
1. Two letter State Identifier (AK, AZ, CA, CO, ES, ID, NM, NV, MT, OR, UT, WA, WY)
5. Two-digit alphabetical designator (see Table 1) will be included for command class equipment only.
6. District Number (single digit that identifies the district within the State)
2. Equipment Type Number (single digit that identifies the type of equipment (see Table 1)
3. Equipment Number (a two-digit number, 01-99, that is assigned by the district)

Fire Equipment Identification Standards These specifications apply to command class fire equipment. All engines, water tenders, dozers, crew carriers that are purchased through the National Fire Equipment Program (NFEP) come with fire equipment identification pre-installed and should not be altered. Specifications for non-command class equipment will vary slightly from these requirements due to original equipment and fire equipment size and design features of vehicle and fire package.
General All lettering, numbering, and striping applied shall be placed in compliance with NFPA 1906 current edition standards and ASTM D 4956, “Standard Specifications for Retro-reflective sheeting for Traffic Control” (unless otherwise specified). Finish of all lettering, numbering, and striping applied shall be smooth, and void of air pockets or other blemishes.
All numbers and letters shall be placed to allow easy readability from left to right and shall not be placed in areas that reduces visibility, across door seams, reflectors, lights or other objects.
Placement of some numbers/letters may require the installation of a stainless-steel plate. Chassis design will vary thus locations are approximate and should be based on each individual vehicle.
Equipment Front A 6-inch-tall x 12-inch-wide reflective white stripe shall be positioned at the front of the equipment on each end of bumper wings. The equipment identifier shall be centered horizontally within the white stripe on the driver side of the front bumper with 3-inch black block bold reflective numbers. Sizes may be adjusted to accommodate the fit.
Equipment Rear Striping on the rear shall cover at least 50% of the width. Material/pattern/color and alignment shall match side stripes exactly.
Equipment shall have 3-inch black block bold reflective letters “BLM FIRE” set in the reflective stripe on the rear, passenger side. Equipment shall have 3-inch black block bold reflective letters for state and district identifier placed on the driver side bottom corner.
The equipment identifier shall be displayed in 3-inch black block bold reflective letters set in the reflective stripe on the rear, driver side.
Stripe requirements/colors and alpha/numeric character sizes may differ for non-command class fire equipment.
Equipment Sides Striping on the equipment sides shall cover at least 50% of the cab and body length and be 3M 280i Lemon Yellow in color. Striping shall follow the natural contour of the body in a 1-inch stripe, 3/8-inch space, 3-inch stripe, 3/8-inch space, 1-inch stripe, horizontal pattern on the upper 1/3 of the body.
Equipment shall have a BLM 10-inch emblem centered on the driver and passenger front doors set within the striping. The letters “BLM” shall be identified in 3-inch black block bold reflective lettering at the top left of the BLM emblem and the letters “FIRE” in 3-inch black block bold reflective lettering on the top right of the BLM emblem. The letters “BLM” and “FIRE” shall be placed so that the top of the letters are level with the top of the BLM emblem and set within the striping. Centered at the bottom of the BLM emblem shall be the state and district identifier, in 3-inch black block bold reflective lettering (example “WA-SPD”).
The equipment identifier shall be installed on both passenger and driver sides above the front fender in 3-inch black bold reflective letters/numbers.
The equipment identifier shall be installed on both passenger and driver sides at the rear of the equipment (near the corners) in 3-inch black bold reflective letters/numbers.
Equipment Top The equipment identifier shall be installed using 14-inch (minimum) black block bold non-reflective lettering on top of the cab roof. Numbers shall be placed to read from the rear of the equipment and visible from above. Numbers shall not be placed under the equipment lighting package or antennas.
Doors Reflective stripe shall be installed on the interior cab and any other door edge that open outward per NFPA 1906 current edition.
Changes / Modifications Units may request to add additional identifiers or logos to fire equipment to meet local agreements or operating procedures. Requests shall be routed to the Fire Operations Chief, Preparedness and Suppression Standards, via email.
Blended or Service First Units Special consideration is allowed for multi-agency equipment. These units will follow the BLM identifier standards and may add a multi-agency logo to one or both sides of the vehicle.
