About this file
This is a Statement of Need document for the procurement of a vibra-coring system by the U.S. Geological Survey Florence Bascom Geoscience Center (FBGC). The system will be used to evaluate sub-bottom stratigraphy in lakes, rivers, and coastal areas, enabling rapid mapping of stratigraphic horizons across large geographic areas through sediment core retrieval. The vibra-coring system must meet specific technical requirements including a lightweight design (100-200 lbs), impact force capability of at least 3,000 lb/ft with adjustable output, vibration frequency exceeding 1,000 vibrations per minute, and compatibility with 3 and 4-inch core barrels. The equipment must be capable of collecting cores longer than 5 meters and accommodate both long (200-meter) and short (50-meter) power cables for variable water depths. Additionally, the system must support switching between DC-AC or 120-220v power supplies.
The related Request for Quote solicitation (140G0126Q0293) was issued on or about September 10, 2026, with written quotes due on or about September 16, 2026, and an anticipated award date of September 17, 2026. The equipment must be delivered to Reston, VA within 60 days of order receipt. The procurement is under NAICS code 334516 with a 1,000-employee size standard. The Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey Office of Acquisitions and Grants is the procuring agency. All responsible sources may submit quotations; vendors must be registered at SAM.gov and comply with Buy American Act domestic sourcing requirements, disclosing any foreign end products. Responses should be submitted to rafael_anderson@ios.doi.gov.

I. Technical Specifications
II.
a. Introduction We request to purchase vibra-coring system for the U.S. Geological Survey Florence Bascom Geoscience Center (FBGC). The vibra-core is needed to evaluate the sub-bottom stratigraphy of lakes, rivers and coastal areas. Retrieval of sediment cores with this equipment will allow us to rapidly map stratigraphic horizons of interest across large areas.
The technical requirements for the vibra-core are as follows:
· Lightweight (100-200 lbs)
· Capable of at least 3000 lb/ft of impact force with adjustable force output
· More than 1000 vibrations per minute
· Accepts 3 and 4-inch core barrels
· Can collect > 5 meter long cores
· Accepts long (200 meter) and short (50 meter) power cables, for different water depths
· Can switch between DC-AC or 120-220v power supplies
