STATEMENT OF WORK

Remove Existing Shingles and Re-shingle Bathhouse and Toilets Location:

Lake Ilo National Wildlife Refuge 489 102nd Ave SW Dunn Center, ND 58626

Background:

The Lake Ilo National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is located in Dunn County North Dakota. The rehabilitation of three historic buildings needs the existing shingles removed and replaced with shingles that meet archeological integrity.

We are using Decra Shake XD metal shake roofing because it ensures the retention of the architectural integrity of the historic structures to meet the requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). These structures are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) which requires special consideration in the treatment of a historic property. The soffits and facia would be replaced with metal with impressed or embossed wood design in a shiplap style to look like wood cladding. The metal shakes, soffit, and fascia will help obtain an appearance closer to the original cedar shakes and wood cladding while considering durability, maintenance, and cost. Using these materials reduces the direct or indirect effects of the project on the structures. In other words, the replacement of the roof of a structure would have a minimal effect on the materials, design, and workmanship, while not affecting the integrity of location, feeling, setting, or association on both individual structures and a group of structures. The overall integrity would not be diminished or compromised. The retention of the general roofing style and color would be in keeping with the historic and current design, style, and character. Use of these shingles, soffit, and fascia are more likely to meet the requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) than other options. If the shingles are not used, additional cultural resource compliance actions would be recommended.
