About this file

This is a specification document for electrical and electronic soldering standards issued by the U.S. Geological Survey's Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF) located at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi. The specification, designated HIF-S-04 with revision HIF-S-04D dated September 7, 2010, defines soldering requirements for use in the Survey's Hydrologic Instrumentation Program.

The document establishes that all soldering shall conform to ANSI/J-STD-001 standards with four specific modifications. HIF products are classified as Class 3 unless otherwise specified. The specification mandates Sn63 solder composition with optional solder form, eliminating the ANSI standard's allowance for Sn60 and Sn62 compositions. Additionally, the military classification paragraph is deleted entirely. A critical requirement prohibits exposed basis metal caused by cutting component leads after soldering, contrary to the ANSI standard's permissibility of such exposure. These modifications represent stricter requirements than the baseline ANSI/J-STD-001 standard to ensure quality standards appropriate for the HIF's hydrologic instrumentation applications.
