About this file

This document is a Statement of Work outlining a project to replace and expand the network cabling at the USGS Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science facility. The project requires removing outdated Category 5 ethernet cable and installing new Category 6 cable for runs under 180 feet and Category 6a cable for runs exceeding 180 feet between 26 office and lab locations across two buildings. Deliverables include running and terminating the new cables, installing patch panels, testing each cable, and labeling them according to the circuit numbers from the main switches. The contractor must also properly support and secure the cables above drop ceilings and along walls. This project is in response to the federal contract opportunity solicitation number 140G0224R0007 seeking a contractor to perform the network wiring upgrades at the Tunison Aquatics Lab facility as described in the Statement of Work.

USGS Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science Ethernet Cable Replacement

1.0 Introduction and Background

Introduction: USGS, Great Lakes Science Center’s, Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science is in need of replacement and expansion of their outdated network cabling. The Tunison Lab is located at 3075 Gracie Rd., Cortland NY.

Background: The facilities upper and lower laboratory buildings have a total of 26 office and lab locations that require internet access. Existing internet cable is outdated category 5 and needs replacement. Additional internet access in several locations is also needed because of the increase in staff. The increase in staff is a result of the co-location of a USGS WRD in Ithaca NY to the USGS BRD site in Cortland NY.

2.0 Scope

Existing category 5 ethernet cable is to be removed and category 6 ethernet cable is to be installed between designated locations on the attached blueprints. Category 6 cable should be used for distances less than 180ft and Category 6a will be used for distances that exceed 180ft. The upper laboratory needs internet in 20 locations. The lower laboratory needs internet in 6 locations.

3.0 Applicable Documents

· Applicable building drawings are included with main router/switch locations and main office and lab cable terminations designated.

· Photos of router/main switch arrangements are included.

4.0 Technical Requirements

· Category 6 cable is to be used for runs under 180 ft. and category 6a for runs exceeding 180ft.

· Existing category 5 cable is to be removed and discarded.

· Category 6 and 6a cables should be terminated with Category 6, RJ45 jacks.

· Cable labeling will be placed at terminations and include the circuit number from the main switch.

· Cabling above drop ceilings should be supported by J-hooks or bridal rings approved for low voltage cabling and not supported by ceiling grid.

· Surface mounted raceways shall be used from ceiling penetrations to surface mounted junction box locations.

· One each, 24-position category 6 patch panel, shall be used in the main switch/router locations in both the upper and lower lab buildings and provisioned with appropriately sized cables running between the patch panel and the main switch adjacent to the panel.

5.0 Deliverables

Major tasks include:

· Running category 6 for runs under 180 ft. and category 6a for runs exceeding 180ft. from the router/main switch locations to each location marked on the drawings.

· In the upper laboratory run 20 ethernet cables (category 6 for runs under 180 ft. and category 6a for runs exceeding 180ft.) from the router/main switch locations to each location marked on the drawing.

· In the lower laboratory run 6 ethernet cables (category 6 for runs under 180 ft. and category 6a for runs exceeding 180ft.) from the router/main switch locations to each location marked on the drawing.

· Cable supported above drop ceilings with J-hooks or bridal rings approved for low voltage cabling and not supported by ceiling grid.

· Removal and discard of old existing category 5 cable.

· Securing cables to walls with wire mold or equivalent surface mounted raceways from ceiling penetrations to junction boxes.

· Provisioning cable ends with appropriate Category 6, RJ45 jack terminations.

· Removal of the 8-position category 5 patch panel in the upper lab and installation of a 24-position category 6 patch panel in its place. Provide category 6 cables connecting the new patch panel to the adjacent main switch.

· Installation of a 24-position category 6 patch at the lower lab main switch and providing category 6 cables connecting to the main switch.

· Testing each cable for end-to-end continuity and speed.

· Label cables at each junction box with the main switch circuit.

6.0 Quality Assurance Plan (QAP)

· Contractor Shall test each RJ45 port installed with a network tester to determine network capabilities, speeds, and good connections. Provide verification to Owner of testing.
