About this file

This document contains the specifications and salient characteristics for a gas pycnometer required by the U.S. Geological Survey Geology, Energy, and Minerals Science Center (GEMSC). The key requirements include: a small tabletop unit less than 4 sq ft and 2 ft in height, temperature stabilization, touchscreen interface, network and USB connectivity, calibration to NIST standards, rapid measurement time of less than 15 minutes, and the capability to analyze a variety of sample types. The instrument must be new, include a one-year warranty, and additional training/consultation if requested.

The related federal contract opportunity is Solicitation Number 140G0124Q0216 for the "GAS PYCNOMETER IN ACCORDANCE WITH SALIENTS", which will be issued as a Request for Quote (RFQ) around 06/28/2024 with quotes due by 07/09/2024. This is a total small business set-aside with a NAICS code of 334516 and size standard of 1000 employees. The anticipated award date is 08/01/2024, and the delivery requirement is within 60 days of the contractor receiving the purchase order. Interested vendors must be registered in SAM.gov.

Specifications/Salient Characteristics

Salient Characteristics that must be met are the following:

Gas pycnometer:

• Small tabletop unit less than 4 ft2 in area and less than 2 ft in height.

• Thermoelectric temperature stabilization of measurement cell within +/- 0.25°C of set temperature

• Hinged self-aligned lid for repeatable cell closure

• Touchscreen interface to provide standalone operation of instrument, including performing measurements, reviewing results, printing, reports, and defining methods.

• Laboratory network connectivity over TCP-IP through ethernet or WiFi connection

• USB connectivity for integration with lab balance or peripheral input devices

• Include calibration volume spheres, calibrated to relevant NIST tests, in accordance with ISO, and

ANSI certifications

• Determination of true volume and true density of solids, powders, and slurries, providing accuracy to 0.02% and repeatability of 0.01%

• Rapid measurement of less than 15 minutes per sample including multiple replicates to ensure data quality and assess measurement precision

• Cell volume for maximum sample volume must be between 95 cm3 and 140 cm3

• Pycnometer must connect seamlessly to gas tank source and cell must be purged

• Analysis must be automated upon closure of cell, including cell purging, replicate measurements and venting.

• Operate with free interoperable software loaded onto the instrument

• Capability to analyze oven dried or water saturated samples

• Capability to analyze lithified rock samples or disaggregated sediments

Miscellaneous:

• The instrument must be new and a model currently in production. Refurbished or demonstrator instruments are not acceptable.

• The instrument warranty must be one-year parts, labor, and travel.

• Must include at least 1 day of additional training or application consultation (either on-site of off-site) if requested.

Required Accessories:

• A durable power cord for standard North American wall outlets

• High quality, dual stage, stainless steel diaphragm gas regulator for inert gases must be provided, which meets delivery pressure range of 0-25 or 0-30 psig and includes North American CGA-580 fitting.
