About this file
This document is a Salient Characteristics specification for cosmic ray neutron sensors required under federal contract S26043. The procurement specifies delivery of three sensors total: one above-ground sensor and two underground sensors intended for soil moisture measurement, neutron radiation environmental monitoring, and Snow Water Equivalent (SWE)/snow depth measurements.
The above-ground sensor (1 ea.) must feature a 7" x 7" x 40" size profile with a moderated neutron detection sensor including a proportional counter and digital pulse monitor electronics. It shall achieve a sensitivity ratio of at least 3.1 times a standard neutron detector (CRS1000), be housed in a UV-stabilized marine-grade corrosion-resistant sealed enclosure, and include an IP67-rated waterproof feed-through connector and RJ45 power/communication connector. The sensor must support SDI-12 communications, operate across -40 to 70°C, include anodized aluminum mounting brackets and PUR-jacketed interface cables, and provide a 2-year warranty with technical support.
The underground sensors (2 ea.) share similar specifications with enhanced durability requirements: a 4x sensitivity ratio versus standard detectors, military-style IP68-rated fully potted connectors, and gel-filled 10-meter cables with military-style connectors and rugged jackets. All sensors operate at identical temperature ranges and include 2-year warranties. Delivery locations are split between the USGS Denver Federal Center (1 underground sensor to Tyler Lampard) and USGS Carson City, Nevada (1 underground sensor and 1 above-ground sensor to Gwen Davies).
