5. Place of Performance:

The work sites consist of approximately 2.9 acres or turf at Bunker Hill and approximately 2.4 acres of turf at Dorchester Heights Monuments, two very important historical landscapes of the Boston National Historical Park.

6. Schedule of Work:

A. Grounds Maintenance Services (CLIN 00010)

Shall be conducted between 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday at a minimum interval of seven days between cuts at both sites (i.e. every Thursday).

This day will be determined before work begins. Weekend services are only optional when coordinated and arranged in advance with the COR to accommodate for special events or periods of inclement weather that would postpone normal service. (See Bid Sheet Attachment for Dorchester Heights)

Entire mowing/cleaning operations for each location shall begin and be completed in one day weather and conditions permitting.

Exceptions may be made by the COR to allow mowing over a two day time period when visitation is high to avoid injuring visitors. These exceptions shall be coordinated between the COR and the Contractor Supervisor in advance. Contractor shall also be responsible for traffic control of visitors when performing operations through the use of signage or orange cones to alert pedestrians in walkways where the work is being done. Contractor personnel shall wear shirts with company logo so they are easily identifiable.

7. Grounds Maintenance Tasks:

A. Lawn Maintenance:

The contractor will be responsible for grounds upkeep and maintenance of both locations throughout the year. This includes mowing operations, leaf and debris clean-up, and basic tree and shrub maintenance. The turf areas at both locations shall be mowed, trimmed, and edged according to the following guidelines as described below:

B. Mowing (CLIN 00011):

Mowing operations will be performed once each week starting in the spring as soon as the weather allows continuing through the end of the season in the fall as the turf requires. (Note: there are no set dates, the work will be done as necessary throughout the year as the weather and seasonal conditions allow.)

Before each day of mowing operations, contractor crew shall perform a site walk prior to mowing to collect and clean up any trash, debris, rocks, fallen limbs, etc.

to prevent machine damage, provide for visitor safety, and to prevent unsightly messes caused by the shredding of trash by mowers.

Lawns shall be maintained at a uniformed height of 2 1/2 inches in the spring and fall and 3 to 3 1/2 inches during the summer to stimulate growth. No cuts shall be performed when the height of the lawn does not exceed these size limitations due to slow growth rate conditions.

No more than 1/3 of the grass blade shall be removed during any given mowing operation. Each successive mowing shall be in a different direction, and at approximately right angles to the previous mowing when applicable on turf near or at level grade.

Under no circumstances shall the Contractor mow lawns when they are excessively wet. The contracting supervisor will coordinate with the COR to determine the level of wetness as well as determine the waiting period after heavy rains for a minimum of one 24 hour waiting period to avoid turf damage and then reschedule the cut with the contractor supervisor.

No riding mowers shall be allowed on steep slopes.

Extreme care shall be taken by the Contractor to assure that no scalping occurs in any area or location. (Scalping shall be considered to be cutting the grass so short as to permanently injure, kill, or remove the grass.)

C. Trimming/Edging (CLIN 00012):

In ALL areas, grass shall be trimmed level along all curbs, foundations, fences, and any other objects within the designated operational areas.

Trimming is defined as cutting grass using a string trimmer (weed whacker) and shall be performed during EVERY mowing operation.

Edging shall be performed along all sidewalks and other pedestrian paths to maintain a well-defined delineation between lawn and hardscape areas.

Edging is defined as cutting the grass and scoring the soil surface alongside of the hardscape using a power edger or string trimmer.

Trimming and edging operations utilizing a string trimmer will also include joints and cracks in sidewalks, stairs, curbs and any other hardscape locations on the property to maintain a professional and tidy appearance. These tasks shall be performed during every mowing operation, as needed.

Edging shall be performed at the beginning of the season and maintained for the remaining cuts.

D. Clippings (CLINs 00011 and 00012):

As part of mowing and trimming/edging operations, all clippings shall be blown or swept off walks after each cut and returned to the lawn to recycle nutrients and shall not be removed from the sites unless directed by the COR.

Clippings shall not be allowed to remain in swaths/clumps that could cause damage to the lawn and will be either raked or broken up. This will be reviewed by the contract supervisor before determining the completion of the work.
