The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) is part of the University of Maryland and was established under the sponsorship of the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security (OUSD I&S) to serve as a long-term strategic asset, one of only 15 designated DoD University-Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs). ARLIS is uniquely charged by the DoD with performing research in the human, information, and social sciences aimed at improving performance in all aspects of intelligence and national security work. ARLIS is the only UARC focusing on the human domain and conducts classified and unclassified research spanning tasks from basic research to advanced technology development. ARLIS serves as a long-term strategic resource for the intelligence and security communities. ARLIS develops and maintains research and development capabilities in social systems, information, performance and augmentation, and human-machine integration. In parallel, ARLIS builds infrastructure to enable test, evaluation, verification, and validation of developed technologies. Through UMD and relationships across academia and industry, ARLIS has a broad reach into deep talent that may be used to supplement its in-house researchers.
