Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs
PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
Thales Nano H-Genie bench-top hydrogen generator (Brand Name or Equal)
1. Statement of Need and Purpose: The National Center for Advancing Translational
Sciences (NCATS), Division of Preclinical Innovation (DPI) needs a compact stand alone high pressure hydrogen generator that produces hydrogen through electrolysis of deionized water. Importantly, it will be used by NCATS chemists to perform its ongoing research studies that involve hydrogen reactions safely with its existing ThalesNano software, autosampler and peripherals.
2. Background Information and Objective: The National Center for Advancing
Translational Sciences (NCATS) which is a center at the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) was established to transform the translational process so that new treatments and cures for disease can be delivered to patients faster.
A major goal of the research performed by DPI involves projects across the preclinical phases of the translational science spectrum. This research also involves running reactions safely through the use of hydrogen. Hydrogen gas is used as a reagent in the catalytic reduction of hydrocarbons for many chemical transformations. An essential component of producing hydrogen with a generator will eliminate the need to use hydrogen tanks for running reactions with the risk of a tank explosion.
