McNary Downstream Miter Gate Monoliths - Concrete Subsurface Investigation
1. BACKGROUND and PURPOSE
Background
The embedded gudgeon anchors for the McNary downstream miter gate have exceeded the recommended service life and are programmed for replacement in FY24. The four gudgeon anchors are embedded in the two mass concrete monoliths at the downstream end of the navigation lock (Monoliths 38 and 39). The monoliths are plain, unreinforced concrete gravity sections, that were post-tensioned in the 1970’s with over 100 prestressing units (bundled 7-wire strands) to arrests cracks and stabilize the monoliths. Additionally, there are multiple embedded utilities running through the concrete.
Purpose
The Contractor will provide all labor, supplies and equipment to conduct a concrete subsurface investigation of the two downstream gate monoliths (M38 and M39) using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Information obtained from the GPR scans will provide spatial information needed for replacement of the miter gate gudgeon anchors and appurtenances. The Contractor will use state-of-the-art methods and equipment to scan to the maximum depth possible from selected surfaces. The Contractor will identify and locate all known and unknown embedded objects subject to the limitations of the scanning technology. The Contractor will map all scanned objects in a three-dimensional computer/CAD model.
The following surfaces will be scanned at each monolith (in order of priority):
1) Deck, elevation 348.0.
2) Lockside wall face, elevation 348.0-318.0.
3) Downstream wall face, elevation 348.0-328.0.
4) Select wall faces in the stairways, elevation 345.0-320.0.
Produce a three-dimensional CAD model and two-dimensional drawings with all items detected during the scan (embedded objects, monoliths cracks and voids). Identify all deviations from the Government-furnished model and as-built drawings. Provide dimensions in feet-inches along with estimated limits of precision (plus/minus x-number inches) for each dimension.
Reference surfaces are the actual deck, downstream and lockside wall surfaces of each monolith. Report dimensions as dimensional coordinates relative to these surfaces. The origin (0,0,0) of the coordinate system is the point of intersection of the lockside face, the downstream face and the deck surface.
