Statement of Need / Required Specification High-Speed Camera

Background The Productions Systems Group (PSG) in The Engineering Laboratory (EL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) supports the EL by conducting research and development in the areas of measurement methods, models, instrumentation, sensors, and data to improve scientific understanding and control of manufacturing processes, equipment and workpiece properties. The PSG is engaged in additive manufacturing (AM) research, which is causing fundamental changes in the way parts are produced. Where typical manufacturing operates by cutting away or molding material, in additive manufacturing, digital designs guide the fabrication of complex, three-dimensional products that are built up, layer by layer.

Purpose The purpose of this acquisition is to obtain one (1) Photron S16 high speed camera, manufactured by Photron USA, Inc, located at 9520 Padgett ST STE 110 San Diego, CA 92126-4446, to be used within multiple projects. This will allow NIST’s additive manufacturing (AM) research to create a new research platform for dynamic AM metal powder flow characterization and expand and improve capabilities in AM melt pool thermography.
