About this file

This document is a Color, Markings, and Insignia (CMI) Package for a B-1B Lancer aircraft (Serial Number 83-0070) at the Hill Aerospace Museum. The package details the specific paint scheme and marking requirements for restoring the aircraft to its historical configuration. The aircraft, which entered US Air Force inventory in 1986 and was assigned to the 96th Bombardment Wing, will be painted primarily in Light Gray (FS36118) with white (FS17925) landing gear areas, and will feature National Star Insignia on the wings and aft fuselage in Dark Gray (FS36081).

The restoration includes precise specifications for insignia placement, such as positioning the National Star on each wing with specific dimensional guidelines, maintaining symmetry on the aft fuselage, and preserving the aircraft's "7 Wishes" logo with specified colors. Additional markings include call numbers "AF83 070" on the vertical stabilizer, UARRSI target stripes, Air Force serial number, door instructions, rescue arrows, danger triangles, and "Armament" markings. The document provides comprehensive visual references and technical details to ensure accurate historical preservation of the B-1B Lancer for museum display.

Hill Aerospace Museum B-1B Lancer – CMI Package April 2025

Hill Aerospace Museum

Color, Markings, and Insignia Package

B-1B Lancer (83-0070)

I. Background

The B-1 Lancer entered the US Air Force operational inventory during the mid-1980s. Since then, Hill AFB’s depot has helped to keep it combat-ready, particularly in maintaining its weapons; propellant and cartridge activated devices; landing gear components; as well as flight simulators and training devices. Further, because of the base realignment and closure activity of the 1990s, the depot gained additional responsibility for the health of the B-1 fleet as it took over maintenance of its secondary power systems, hydraulic components, rotary launchers, and wing fairings. In addition to material support, Hill AFB supports the B-1 as primary manager for one of the aircraft’s premier combat test ranges, the Utah Test and Training Range. On a regular basis, B-1s would deploy/operate from Hill AFB while participating in combat exercises with the Hill AFB F-16 Falcons and other aircraft.

This aircraft arrived at Hill AFB on 3 February 2003. Nicknamed “7 Wishes,” the plane (S/N 83-0070) was gained into US Air Force inventory from Rockwell International on 16 April 1986 and assigned to the 96th Bombardment (Heavy) Wing of the Strategic Air Command at Dyess AFB in Abilene, Texas on 6 May 1986. It spent its service life training air crews, accumulating almost 4,000 flight hours. The aircraft’s last assignment was to the 28th Bombardment Wing, 8th Air Force (Air Combat

Command) at Dyess AFB.

II. Current Configuration

The aircraft is currently marked in a gray scheme as it was when it was received from

Dyess AFB. The upper and lower surfaces of the fuselage, wings, and nacelles are painted Light Gray (FS36118). The landing gear area is painted white (FS17925). Both sides of the aft fuselage and the underside of the right wing have the national star painted in Dark Gray (FS36081).

III. Overview of proposed paint scheme alterations

Overall Scheme:

The aircraft will be painted in the gray color scheme as it arrived at Hill AFB. The scheme will use Light Gray (FS36118) for the airframe, wings and nacelles, and White (FS17925) for the landing gear areas.

National Insignia on Wings:

The National Star Insignia will be placed on each wing. The right wing will have the National Star on the bottom surface and the left wing will have the same insignia on the upper surface.

The National Star Insignia will be positioned as illustrated. The insignia will be applied so that the line through the center and the top point of the star is perpendicular to the constant 50 percent chord line of the wing. The insignia selected for the wing will not exceed 60” in diameter nor drop below 20” in diameter.

The diameter of the circumscribed circle will be the standard size closest but not exceeding 75 percent of the distance between the wing leading edge and the movable surface cutout at the point of application. All borders will be painted in Dark Gray (FS36081).

National Insignia on Aft Fuselage:

The National Insignia will appear on both sides of the aft fuselage according to the following instructions. All borders will be in Dark Gray (FS36081). Symmetry will be maintained when applying the insignia on each side of the fuselage.
