About this file
This is a Statement of Work for the Library of Congress requiring contract support to procure bifurcated styli for audio playback and preservation purposes. The Library of Congress National Audio-Visual Conservation Center (NAVCC) Audio Preservation Laboratory in Culpeper, Virginia maintains a large collection of metal master father discs and stampers (negative versions used in disc pressing processes). These specialized w-shaped styli are required to ride along the raised profiles of father discs, as opposed to the grooves found in final pressed products, enabling playback and digital preservation of historically significant audio recordings in the collection that may represent the only surviving examples of certain releases or offer superior audio fidelity compared to circulated pressings.
The contractor shall provide a total of 18 bifurcated styli across two specifications: 4 units of LP/micro groove width bifurcated styli (model BPS33) and 14 units of wide groove bifurcated styli (model BPS78). All delivered styli will be tested by the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) and Audio Lab Engineers for defects within two weeks of receipt, with any defective units to be returned to the vendor for replacement at no additional cost.

Statement of Work Bifurcated Styli
C.1. BACKGROUND
The Library of Congress (Library) requires contract support to purchase a bifurcated styli required in order to be able play back metal master father discs in the Recorded Sound collection. At the Library of Congress National Audio-Visual Conservation Center (NAVCC) Audio Preservation Laboratory in Culpeper, Virginia The Library of Congress has a large collection of metal parts (200k in the UMG Collection alone). A significant portion of these are ‘fathers’ or stampers which are negative versions used in the disc pressing process. To play these discs, a specialized w-shaped stylus is required to ride along the raised profiles of the disc as opposed to the grooves of the final pressed products they would have created. These discs are an important part of the collection that in some cases are the only surviving example of a release. They may also offer far higher fidelity audio as opposed to the circulated pressings these discs were used to create. The ability to play back and digitally preserve these collection items vastly increases accessibility of the audio recordings they contain for present and future patrons.
C.2. SCOPE
The contractor shall provide the equipment listed in Table 1 which includes LP and wide groove compatible bifurcated styli.
C.3. REQUIREMENTS
The contractor shall provide bifurcated styli of the following specifications
Paragraph reference Description Quantity C.3.1 LP/micro groove width bifurcated styli – model
