About this file

This is a Purchase Description document for a federal contract acquisition by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically the National Cancer Institute's Pediatric Oncology Branch (POB).

The acquisition is for one (1) Azenta A440 Liquid Nitrogen (LN₂) Vapor-Phase Cryogenic Storage Freezer with thirty-two (32) associated 13-2 Square Vial Box Racks. The freezer is designed for long-term cryopreservation of clinical patient samples and research specimens at extremely low temperatures (-150°C). In the required 13-2 Square Rack configuration, the unit can store up to 41,600 2 mL vials or 416 2-inch boxes while maintaining samples below the required temperature threshold for more than 15 days during operational disruptions. Key specifications include an outer diameter of 45 inches, overall height of 59 inches, usable height of 30 inches, LN₂ capacity of 150 liters, and a 3-year parts and craftsmanship warranty with 7-year vacuum insulation coverage. The freezer features automatic touchscreen temperature and nitrogen level control, independent monitoring systems, WiFi/LAN connectivity for remote monitoring and alerts, LED interior lighting, automatic fog clearing, and ergonomic design with fold-out step for safe sample access. The equipment must fit within existing laboratory space dimensions currently occupied by units being replaced. Delivery is required within 60 days after receipt of order to Building 10 CRC, 1W-3833, 10 Center Drive, Bethesda, Maryland 20892, with contact to Miki Kasai, Technical Laboratory Manager at (240) 858-3407.

1. Background Information and Objective:

Cryopreservation is the use of very low temperatures to preserve and store intact living cells and tissue. This is of particular importance for clinical and research laboratories that require the safe storage of both clinical (patient) and research samples. These include patient tissue, cell lines, and samples obtained from in vivo research projects. These extreme temperatures (-150°C) allow researchers to safely store these invaluable samples and access them at a later time.

These extremely cold temperatures preserve both their viability and genetic material without compromising integrity over time. Cells (both cell lines and cell suspensions acquired from clinical and research samples) and tissue can be stored for many years without compromising viability or genetic profiles.

The Azenta A440 Liquid Nitrogen Freezer is a high-capacity storage system designed to safely preserve biological samples at extremely low temperatures. In the required 13-2 Square Rack configuration, it can store up to 41,600 2 mL vials and maintain samples below the required temperature threshold for more than 15 days in the event of a disruption in normal operation.

This acquisition is for one (1) Cryogenic LN2 Vapor Cryo Freezer and associated racks for the proper long-term storage of clinical and research samples utilized by the clinical and research staff of the Pediatric Oncology Branch (POB), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH).

2. Generic Name of Product:

Liquid Nitrogen (LN₂) Vapor-Phase Cryogenic Storage Freezer with Racks (Qty. 32)

3. Purchase Description: The unit is designed to maximize storage while fitting into limited lab space. It provides more capacity without requiring additional floor space, allowing it to replace existing freezers without needing layout changes. The freezer is easy to use and includes a touchscreen that automatically maintains the correct temperature and liquid nitrogen levels. It also records important data about the freezer’s performance, which can be saved, emailed, or uploaded to the cloud. Built-in WiFi/LAN allows users to monitor the system remotely and receive alerts if there are any issues. To help protect samples, the system continuously monitors both temperature and liquid nitrogen levels independently.

Features like interior LED lighting and automatic fog clearing improve visibility, making it easier to locate and access samples. The design also focuses on user safety and convenience, with features like a lower access height and a fold-out step to make reaching samples easier and reduce strain. Overall, the Azenta A440 provides a reliable, space-efficient, and user-friendly solution for long-term sample storage in a laboratory setting.
