About this file

This is a Statement of Work/Functional Requirements document from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center for the acquisition of an autonomous, submersible, high-resolution three-dimensional imaging sonar system. The system is intended to support coastal and seabed monitoring by the Coastal and Estuarine Dynamics Group, strengthening capabilities for measuring and tracking changes in seabed morphology, sediment transport, and subsea sand wave migration. The system must support repeated and extended subsea deployments without continuous surface support.

The required autonomous 3D imaging sonar system must include dual-axis 3D scanning capability with high-resolution acoustic imaging and point cloud generation (X, Y, Z coordinates with intensity and backscatter data). Technical specifications include: high-frequency pencil-beam transducer; full 360-degree horizontal and ±100-degree vertical scanning sector; imaging range up to 50 meters with 2 mm or less range resolution; 0.1-degree scan angle resolution; acoustic frequency options of 750 kHz and 1 MHz; maximum power consumption of 8 watts or less; physical dimensions of 100-120 mm diameter and 130-170 mm overall length; RS-232 and RS-485 communication protocols; internal data storage of 32 GB or greater; rechargeable onboard battery of 28 amp-hour capacity or greater with external battery capability; internal sensors (pressure, dual-axis tilt, temperature, compass/heading); two or more sensor ports; maximum operating depth of 100 meters or greater; operating temperature range of –10°C to +50°C; and corrosion-resistant exterior materials for deployments of 6 months or more. Delivery is required to the USGS Woods Hole Coastal & Marine Science Center in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

I. FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC), requires the acquisition of a submersible, autonomous, high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) imaging sonar system to support coastal and seabed monitoring conducted by the Coastal and Estuarine Dynamics Group. The system is needed to strengthen and modernize existing capabilities used to measure and track changes in seabed morphology, including the development and migration of subsea sand waves and other sedimentary bedforms.

The Coastal and Estuarine Dynamics Group conducts long-term seabed monitoring to study sediment transport, seabed stability, and coastal change in dynamic marine environments. To support these efforts, the proposed sonar system shall provide autonomous, high-resolution 3D imaging suitable for repeated and extended subsea deployments without continuous surface support. The system must include an integrated or compatible submersible data recorder capable of acquiring and storing synchronized sonar imagery and accommodating an external battery pack to support longer deployment durations.

Required Specifications for Autonomous 3D imaging sonar system

• Autonomous dual-axis 3D scanning sonar for subsea monitoring and seabed mapping

• Provide high-resolution 3D acoustic imaging and point cloud generation

• Capable of standalone deployment or daisy-chain operation using an RS-485 network

• Outputs 3D point clouds (X,Y,Z) together with intensity and backscatter data

• High-frequency sharp pencil-beam transducer providing fine-scale imaging of seabed morphology and underwater structures

• Full 360 degrees horizontal and wide 200 degrees vertical scanning sector (±100°) to support broad-area subsea imaging

• Imaging range up to 50M with range resolution of 2 mm or less.

• Scan angle resolution as low as 0.1 degrees

• Acoustic frequency options of 750 kHz and 1 MHz to support high-resolution imagery

• Maximum power consumption of 8 W or less

• Communication using RS-232 and RS-485 protocols

• Physical dimensions of 3D scanning sonar, diameter between 100-120 mm and overall length between 130-170 mm

• System shall include fully autonomous data logging and power system for the dual-axis 3D scanning sonar

• Internal data storage capacity of 32 gigabytes (GB) or greater

• Rechargeable onboard battery of 28 amp-hour (Ah) capacity or greater

• Built-in capability to incorporate an external battery for greater capacity and longer deployments

• Internal sensors that include pressure, dual-axis tilt, temperature, and compass/heading

• Two or more sensor ports for multi-sensor integration

• Sensor communication speeds from 4,800 to 230,400 bits per second

• Compatibility with NEMA GPS data strings

• User interface connection to Windows PC for instrument configuration and data retrieval

• Maximum operating depth of 100 meters or greater

• Operating temperature range of –10°C to +50°C

• All exterior materials shall be corrosion resistant for long deployments (6 months or more) in the marine environment
