About this file

This is a Technical Specifications document for an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) procurement by the Department of the Interior, United States Geological Survey (USGS), Ecosystems Mission Area, Cooperative Research Unit (Contract Number 140G0126Q0210). The required USV must feature a catamaran hull design with an open-source, completely customizable operating system and include integrated side scan and bathymetric multibeam sonar systems.

The USV must meet specific physical and performance parameters: deployed dimensions not exceeding 47 x 36.5 x 18 inches, folded transport dimensions not exceeding 47 x 28 x 95 inches, and a weight limit of 32 pounds without payload or batteries. The vehicle must provide a payload capacity of at least 30 pounds, minimum 18-hour endurance, wireless range of at least 200 meters with omnidirectional antenna or 800 meters with directional antenna, cellular communication capability, and a wireless controller for manual navigation. The specifications require a Cerulean Sonar Omniscan 3D 450 SS (or equivalent) 450-kHz 16-channel side scan sonar system, a Cerulean Surveyor Multibeam echosounder (or equivalent) 240-kHz 16-channel multibeam system with 80-degree swath and up to 100-meter depth range with built-in IMU, and a 1080p USB camera with 400-meter depth rating. Additional required connectivity includes at least 3 serial UART ports, 1 ethernet port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, 2 USB 3.0 ports, one 16-bit 3.3V ADC, one 16-bit 6.6V ADC, an ethernet switch for integrating multiple sonar units, and payload brackets with wet link penetrators. The system must use readily available 14.8V 18AH or greater lithium batteries. Delivery is required to the USGS Michigan Cooperative Research Unit at 480 Wilson Road, East Lansing, MI 48824.
